A Spotlight on Learning

A Spotlight on Learning in the SLC on Heights Campus

The SLC teachers are so proud of how well all the students have settled into the routines and their learning, particularly the new students who have just joined our school this year.

During Social and Emotional Learning, students are learning to build a safe, supportive and inclusive learning environment. SLC students revisited our school values and discussed how they can be demonstrated at school, online and during excursions. They worked collaboratively to identify the emotions, feelings and energy levels for each of the Zones of Regulation. Students explored strategies that will help them to self-regulate for each of the zones to help them be successful learners. They discussed and identified where different problems sit on a catastrophe scale and which trusted adults they can turn to if they need help.

In Reading, students have been developing their ability to track their thoughts as they read and explain their thinking about the book. They are practising using different comprehension strategies such as questioning, inferring and connecting to their background knowledge to help them to have a deeper understanding of what they have read. In Writing, students are showing themselves as budding authors as they plan, draft, revise and edit their narratives. They are including sizzling starts, writing to show not tell and using language that is engaging for their readers.

In Mathematics, students have developed their ability to represent information surveyed and collected in different data displays. They are demonstrating their understanding of how to represent numbers and their value through making, recognising and recording them. They compared numbers through hands-on games and ordered numbers on number lines.

At the start of this week, we had the wonderful experience of going to Willum Warrain in Hastings for our excursion. Students deepened their knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal cultures, participating in a Welcoming Ceremony and learning about Koorie Bush Tucker, by identifying plants that are edible.

We have a few incredibly busy and exciting weeks ahead of us. The major highlights will undoubtedly be the upcoming NAPLAN assessments for our Year 5 students in a few weeks time and our SLC Camp to Phillip Island in May.

The SLC teachers are looking forward to the rest of the year with our students and we value every day that we learn and grow together.
