Learning and Curriculum Primary - Stage 3

Student Goal Setting
Classes have been aligning their goals with how they see themselves as a learner and what goals/targets they would like to set to improve and strengthen. This is a very important process, and students have been encouraged to speak at home about what their priorities are, especially after nearly five weeks of school has been completed.
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)
NAPLAN is an annual assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9.
It is a nationwide measure through which parents/carers, teachers, schools, education authorities, governments and the broader community can determine whether or not young Australians are developing the literacy and numeracy skills that provide the critical foundation for other learning and for their productive and rewarding participation in the community.
Year 5 students will sit NAPLAN using their devices in their classroom on Wednesday 12 March – Friday 14 March (inclusive).
NAPLAN Lockdown Browser
A lockdown browser will need to be installed on each student device. Instructions can be found on the Year 5 CANVAS Meeting page under ‘Curriculum’. Further details can be found here: Locked down browser | Online National Assessment Platform.
NAPLAN provisions
Families of students who are eligible to receive provisions due to a diagnosis will be contacted by Ms Meagan Compton this week. If you are yet to provide the College with documentation regarding your son’s needs, please do so at your earliest convenience.
Writing in Stage 3
This fortnight’s Writing Revolution focus has been sentence types, with students learning to identify statements, questions, commands and exclamations. Key learnings from this fortnight include:
Supporting students to vary sentences in their writing
Encourage students to form questions about texts
Helps students learn correct punctuation
Becomes an effective strategy for creating a topic sentence and concluding sentence when writing a paragraph.
