Sharing The Planet

Year 1 - Term 4, 2024

Transdisciplinary Theme

'Sharing the planet'

Central Idea

Living things adapt for life in their environment

As an International Baccalaureate world school, authorised to teach the Primary Year’s Programme, we explore six transdisciplinary themes each year.

During our final unit for the year, we will discuss different types of habitats and the reason why animals and other living things are able to survive in different places. We will be looking at the different needs of living things and how their habitats meet these needs.

During the unit we will be going on an excursion to Werribee Open Range Zoo where students will get to see animals in their habitats. Students will also research and present an oral presentation on a chosen habitat.

Concepts

  • change
  • responsibility
  • connection

Lines of Inquiry

  • Classifying changes in living things
  • How human’s actions play a role
  • Influence of habitats on survival

Action

Action in the PYP is initiated independently by the student as a result of the learning process. Action may be bringing a book or artefact related to the inquiry to school, or student-initiated drawings/posters/research. We celebrate our students’ ACTION every day in our classrooms. If you see your children taking independent action at home, encourage them to share their action with their class.

Thank you to the many students who brought in books to share for our unit ‘How we express ourselves.’ It was also wonderful that many students chose to write their own stories at home and share them with their class.

Skills

  • Research skills: The students will be investigating habitats and animals using books and the internet. They will be formulating questions, collecting information, recording and presenting research findings.
  • Communication skills: Students will communicate their findings or wonderings through an oral presentation about a chosen habitat. They will practise the following communication skills: speaking clearly with appropriate volume, eye contact and body language. They will also develop their listening skills during the oral presentations.
