Food Technology and Textiles

Year 8 Students Bake Up a Storm in Food Tech!

This week, our Year 8 Food Technology students have been busy in the kitchen, baking a classic favourite—chocolate chip cookies! With the delicious aroma wafting through the school, the students showcased their budding culinary skills while practicing key techniques such as measuring, mixing, and baking with precision.

Not only did this activity allow them to indulge in a fun, hands-on lesson, but it also highlighted the importance of following a recipe and understanding the science behind baking. From learning about ingredient ratios to achieving the perfect cookie texture—crispy on the outside, soft in the middle—students took pride in their creations and left with new baking tips under their belts. Students also understood the reasoning for adding oats to our recipe to increase their protein and fibre nutrients.

This sweet treat was a perfect way to reinforce skills around hygiene, teamwork, and time management in the kitchen.

Tie-Dye Fun Across Year 7 and Year 9 Textiles!

It’s been a colourful week in our Textiles classes as both Year 7 and Year 9 students have been getting creative with tie-dye!

Our Year 9 students have taken on the exciting task of making their own custom-designed bucket hats inspired by Coachella Festival. As part of their project, they’ve been experimenting with tie-dye techniques to create unique patterns and vibrant colours. The students learned how to twist, fold, and bind their fabric before applying dyes to create stunning effects. This hands-on activity not only allows them to express their individual style but also teaches them about fabric manipulation and colour theory. We can’t wait to see these amazing hats come to life as they progress through the construction phase!

Meanwhile, our Year 7 students have started to embraced tie-dye as part of their sustainable cushion or reusable bag project. In line with our focus on sustainability and reducing waste, students are designing their own cushions or bags with tie-dye and block printing as a key feature. This project encourages them to think about the lifecycle of their products and how they can make practical, long-lasting items from scratch that will be aesthetically pleasing for their target client - young professionals.

Both year levels are showcasing their individuality through colour and design, with their one-of-a-kind creations adding a splash of personality to their projects. GSC is thrilled with their enthusiasm and the skills they’re developing through these fun and sustainable textile practices!
