Cooking Room Posters
The school has hung three large posters in the cooking room in Block C. The posters showcase the support unit students in their weekly cooking lessons throughout the 2024 school year. The kitchen, which was upgraded in June 2020, provides students with a functional contemporary learning space where daily life skills lessons can be taught. Lessons introduce students to a wide range of fresh foods, the nutritional value of the food they eat, and the skill set they need to prepare ingredients. There is a strong emphasis placed on learning to eat with others as well as cleaning and setting the table. Students also benefit from sensory experiences through touch, smell and taste of fresh foods.
The photos and graphics in the posters serve to prompt student memories and to provide a social narrative to support their learning in the kitchen. The menus are aligned to term programs in History, Science and Technology, Geography, PD/H/PE and NAIDOC week. Specific diets and religious customs are catered for, and teachers adjust and modify recipes when needed.
