State Netball Update:
By Evie M & Zarlie R
On Wednesday the 18th of September, our Grade 6 girls went off to the State finals for netball. When we got there we met up with our team and coaches. We were all nervous for our first game but came out and played a ripper. Everyone was fired up ready to start! We didn't know what to expect but we knew we had to try our hardest. Thanks to all of the help from our coaches Bianca P and Mrs Halsted. Our team ended up making the semi-final, but unfortunately, we lost. At the end of the day, we came 4th overall in the state.
Learning in Action:
Literacy
Reading:
We've been looking at an Aboriginal perspective recently, by researching about the 1900’s and also looking at white people's point of view of the subject of Aboriginal people in Australia. This is a sensitive topic but is so interesting to learn about how people's perspective changes over time and how the race we were born into can also change the way we think about things. We’ve used Venn Diagrams to compare the different perspectives of two time periods and their attitude towards the Indigenous peoples of Australia.
Preview for Learning:
Next term we'll be doing an author's study on Shaun Tan by looking at his award-winning work and books. We will be exploring the themes, messages, and symbolism used in his work.
Writing:
Sayonara poetry! I’ll miss you dearly. But now that we’ve moved on from poetry, we’ve got a new writing piece, our Information reports. But no, these aren’t like any information reports you’ve seen before. Our teachers are not teaching us how to write information reports, instead, they’re teaching us how to write complex sentences. We’re also continuing our scrapbooking, we’ve started doing a poetry piece for whichever grade we chose. For the scrapbooking we are doing rhyming poems, using an ABCCB format or an ABCB format to write the poems.
Preview for Learning:
Moving forward Grade 6 students will be looking at using complex sentences that have embedded clauses that are used to elaborate, extend, and explain a subject or object within a sentence. The students will then explore real-world issues and life experiences that inform the theme of the narrative text. They will then experiment with symbolism and imagery within the texts.
Maths
Arrr me hearties! This week we've been working on mapping and coordinates or more specifically making a treasure map, then directing a pirate to the treasure using coordinates and compass directions. For example, north, south, east, west as well as saying how many grid squares they would need to move to get to the next turn, or the treasure.
Preview for Learning:
Next term we'll be learning all about money and finance and a bit more of a practical, real-life learning unit. We'll also be doing a unit on shapes and tessellations which are geometric shapes that are put together into shape patterns.
Inquiry
We welcomed all parents and family members to come into our classrooms on Monday and 'wow' we were surprised by the fantastic turnout. We got to show everyone our Inquiry Projects on a significant event that happened since 1900. The categories we got to choose from were the Federation, The Constitution, World War One, World War 2, The Women Suffrage Movement, and Aboriginal History. We researched our topic during Inquiry sessions and had the freedom to display the way we wanted. Some groups used Canva, some used Google Slides and others chose to make posters. Thank you to everyone who came to visit.
Wellbeing
The Grade 6 students have continued the well-being rotations each Thursday working on the Rock and Water and Respectful Relationships units. The focus is on Personal Strengths, Problem Solving, and Gender and Identity.
The selected group of students has finished their involvement in 'Girls Zone', which aims to achieve the following outcomes:
"This program is based on Friendship Saver, now called Social Stencil. Social Stencil is an evidence-based program for teachers and counselors that offers young people practical social and communication skills to build peer relationship skills, and a culture of respect, understanding, care, and collaboration. It helps young people to develop a shared language and shared concepts to support their friendships, manage conflict, and gain an understanding of themselves and others. The program uses peer-to-peer learning, group work, games, and supported discussions about our collective strengths and differences."
Division Athletics: By Alicia & Mr Hicks
Wednesday morning 33 students went to Bill Sewart Athletics Track in East Burwood to compete at the Division Athletics competition. Let's get straight to some results! Ayda won her shot put event and has made it through to Region. James won his shot put and also ran like the wind and came first in the sprint! Whoa! Fletcher made it through in high jump and triple jump. Alicia (me) won both her events in the 100-meter sprint and shot put! Now onto Regions that are happening in term 4.
Summer Round Robin Report:
Hot Shot Tennis: By Penny W & Peyton W
Two weeks ago the 5s and 6s went to Summer Round Robin. Peyton and I were at tennis with Ms Holmes and Mrs Phillip as the teachers and some parent helpers. All of the tennis people went to Mountain Gate tennis club. The first game we played was the singles round. When we were there we had an A and B team and we were in the B team. The B team came second overall. It was so exciting that we came second. We had a great opportunity to make friends with kids in other schools and play with them at the break. We had the wonderful opportunity to referee our own games and we all got to learn how tennis worked. We learnt how to work with other schools and to have a bunch of fun.

Handball: By James SW & Ash V
The first day was thrilling, along with trying something new within a team with some new people. I didn’t know too much about handball but I was ready to try my hardest, even though I was not the tallest or fittest person on the team, I still tried my hardest along with my team. We lost most of our games that day but at least we had fun!
Day 2 came and my team and I were more prepared for what was to come. We had a few bumps along the way but we got there eventually There were emotions and strength that day but we still pushed through. We won most of our games and came 5th in the end but we had even more fun in the end and that's what matters most.
Handball rules :
1. Handball is an outdoor sport that is high-speed
2. Where teams strive to throw the ball to other players in their team. You can take 3 steps with the ball, that's it, but you can bounce it and run to.
3. How do you score in Olympic handball? Each team has a goalie protecting the goals. A team scores in Olympic handball by throwing the ball into the opponent's goal. A goal is worth one point.

Volleyball: By Tyler S and Jimmy W
We arrived at Park Ridge with our confident smiles ready to take on our day! The first game we played Templeton and knew we were up for a challenge. Unfortunately lost that one but won every other game. The teams we faced on the first day were Templeton, Waverley Christian College which was also a main challenge, the Basin, and Knox Gardens. We went into the second day ready and way more experienced for our first game. We versed Regency Park and we won 2 sets to 0 which we were really happy about. In our second game, we played Boronia Heights and came out with another win. We were through to the grand final against Templeton but unfortunately, we lost. We will be going to division volleyball and hopefully come back with a win.
Cricket: By Noah L & Kohan D
Day 1, we got to school at 8:30 which is an early start for us and we went to Knox Gardens Primary and instantly got some fielding practice in. At 10 am it was our first game, and they started batting and made a huge score! Luckily we chased them down but we ran out of time with two overs left and we only needed two runs. Luckily Jack and I batted. We peeled off 59 runs to win our first game. The next few games we lost and wasn't our best performance losing comfortably.

Day 2 saw us play our remaining 3 games to try and make the finals. It didn't go our way at all. We got ahead of ourselves, thinking we would win easily but we got pipped in the last ball by the Twin Towers from Waverley Christian College. They hit some big sixes! Everyone had fun, which is the main thing. By Kohan D
Softball: By Georgia G & Ellie E
A few weeks ago the 5s and 6s went off to Summer Round Robin to compete against a wide range of schools in their allocated sport which was softball. All this took place four weeks ago. Our first game was against Knox Gardens which was a close game until the final innings where we ended up getting enormous home runs and won the game by one point. The next game we were pumped and ready to go play against The Basin which ended up being a tie. A highlight of that game was when Evie Hunkin slipped into the mud while she was trying to get the ball. The next game was against Boronia Heights which we ended up losing by one point but at the end of the game, we had lunch. Lacy had hot dogs and Jaidah stole one. The last game of the day was against Templeton and we were so excited because we won that game.
Lysterfield FOOTBALL League: By Mitchell B
The much anticipated LFL (Lysterfield Football League) is back in Term 4 2024. Mr Hicks is currently organising four or five teams that will compete in a round-robin tournament. The games will have field umpires, goal umpires, and boundary umpires. It is a lot of fun so make sure you are on your best behaviour!
