Learning in Action

Literacy:   In Reading over the past fortnight, students have been describing how they feel about the characters and events in stories. They have continued to predict the story line and make connections to their personal lives. In Writing, students have expanded their sentences by adding adverbial where and adverbial when. For example, Jack the Jellyfish ate a jam sandwich at the park on a Monday morning. Students engaged in their last two experiences of skipping and making a fairy garden where students then wrote a personal narrative about them. They concluded our personal narrative unit by publishing their favourite one.

Preview-  Next term we will learn about narratives and persuasives.

Maths:

In Maths we have revised the concept of subtraction ‘taking parts away from a total’ and students have practised various strategies to help them solve the problems, such as using materials, use drawings, flip a friend of 5 or counting backwards from the bigger number.

Over the past fortnight, students have learnt about ‘Mass’ and that various objects are ‘lighter’ or ‘heavier’. Students learnt about ‘hefting’ where we can measure an item’s weight with our hands and determine if an object is lighter or heavier. Students loved searching around the classroom to find objects to heft. To finish off our Mass unit, we introduced the concept of measuring our objects using ‘scales’. Students predicted which chosen object would be heavier or lighter and then tested their predictions using the scales. To conclude the unit, we introduced ‘capacity’ and discussed how much something can hold. We filled up various containers and tested to see which container has the smallest or largest capacity.

Inquiry:

In Inquiry we celebrated our learning and showcased it by creating a personal timeline 'My Life Story'. Students illustrated and wrote about their personal milestones beginning at birth, running through to the present.

Celebration Morning:

Thank you to all the parents and special people who came in on Monday for our special ‘Celebration Morning’ to celebrate our Inquiry learning. Our students were so excited to share and showcase their learning with you.

WELLBEING:

This week students reflected on the term’s learning and took some time to ‘wind down’. We participated in a whole class guided meditation and discussed the importance of keeping our classroom peaceful.
