Year 7

Welcome back!

A warm welcome back to all our Year 7s and their families. Term 2 is well underway, with many exciting new experiences and learning on the horizon. We believe that every Year 7 is capable of success, and we hold them to an extremely high standard.

A timely reminder to all Year 7 students about some of our expectations:

  • Be sure you are arriving to class on time with all the required materials to successfully engage in learning.
  • No mobile phones between the hours of 9 am and 3:15 pm.
  • Be sure to come in full school uniform. As the months are getting colder, a friendly reminder that hoodies are banned. If you wear one, you will be asked to remove it immediately.

Introducing the “14 Before 14” Challenge Program

We are excited to introduce the “14 Before 14” Challenge Program for our Year 7 students. This initiative is designed to support students in developing the skills, habits and mindset needed to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

Throughout the year, students will work towards completing a variety of challenges that align with our school values of Aspiration, Belonging, Community, Diligence and Excellence. These challenges focus not only on academic improvement, but also on personal growth, positive relationships and active involvement in the wider community.

Students will be required to reflect on their experiences, track their progress, and provide evidence of their achievements. This reflective process is a key component of the program, helping students to recognise their growth and set goals for the future.

Parents and carers play an important role in supporting this journey. You will be asked to sign off on completed challenges and are encouraged to have regular conversations with your child about their progress.

Celebrating small successes along the way can have a significant impact on student motivation and confidence.

The “14 Before 14” Challenge is more than completing tasks. It is about developing well-rounded young people who are engaged, resilient and proud of their contributions to the school community.  The focus of this is student-centred, therefore if your child has an idea that they believe would help them achieve ticking off one or more of the challenges please tell them to come and see the Year 7 team to support that happening.

A huge shout out to a number of our Year 7 students who are well underway to achieving some of these challenges, like Sithun M. who is out there every recess cleaning up the Year 7 space and working towards his community service challenge. Great work, Sithun!

If you have any questions about the program, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the Year 7 Team.

Meet the Captains: 7C and 7D

In our third edition of ‘meet the captains’, this week we sat down with our Homegroup Captains from 7C and 7D; Lily and Harrison.

Lily’s favourite subject is Basketball because she enjoys moving around and practising her basketball skills. Her hobby is playing basketball with her friends. She is most excited about taking on a leadership role as she enjoys representing her class.

Harry’s favourite subject is Maths because he feels that his Maths teacher teaches very well and helps him learn a lot. His hobbies include riding motorbikes because he enjoys being outdoors and gaming because he gets to meet new people. He is most excited about taking on a leadership role as he likes being able to support his class and help when others become silly or off task.

Student spotlight: Audrey G.

To finish off this edition of the newsletter, we wanted to highlight some exceptional student work from Audrey. In English, students have been completing a written folio, drafting, editing and completing a narrative of their own. Audrey has done such an amazing job that we wanted to share this below:

Even the most beautiful  roses die

                                                             .One Ava Jan 25th.

It was a bright sunny day on Saturday morning. I had just woken up and there was no one in my hospital room, and this time I loved it. I got up without anyone telling me to be careful not to fall and got dressed without anyone trying to help me and making it worse. But all the happiness came crashing when I came out of the bathroom and my mum was in my room panicking because I did everything on my own. “Why would you get out of bed and get dressed without me?” she screams at me. “Because it’s so annoying when you try and help but all you do is make it worse and I’m sick and tired of it.” I yell back, “And I asked Cole to pick me up from the hospital instead of you so you can leave.” And then she took her stuff and left. Not long after Cole came and got me.

                                                                   .Two Cole Mar 4th.

When I picked up Ava that day her mum wasn’t there, which was strange, but she looked happy. “So where are we going to go today?” she says. “Well did you bring your bathers?” I say. “Yep, wait are we going to the spot?” she said excitedly. “Aw you ruined it,” I say as we enter the carpark. I hauled Ava’s stuff in the car and as I got in the car and sat down, I fought the urge to ask why she was here. “What’s wrong?” She asks “nothing” I say and smile at her. Looking back now I wish I could ask her everything in my mind. When we got there, she squealed with excitement and jumped out of the car, then I got out and locked it. Then she gave me a look, and we bolted for the beach. She put her stuff down and took her shorts and T-shirt off. I took my shirt off and we ran to the water. Four hours later we went back to my place, and her mum was waiting for us and my dad looked angry at me. We got out of the car, and she gave me a kiss goodbye.

                                                                             .Three Ava Jan 25th.

When I got in the car and waved goodbye to Cole the sky went all dark and grey just like how I felt leaving Cole. When we got home, I rushed to the boot of the car before my mum could get to me. The next minute I was rushing for the door and pulling the keys from my pocket, click and the door opens I rush inside and run up the stairs and straight to my room and picked up my favourite book and I read it for hours. Then my joy fades because my mum knocks on my door. “Come in” I say the door opens with a creek and my fake smile drops because she looks as if she was just crying. “Ava” she says shakily. “Yes, mum is everything ok?” “No, you know how you have terminal cancer well you only have one and a half months left” she says now sobbing. I feel a tear fall down my cheek. I don’t say anything, but I stand up and hug her. Feb 14th. I woke up knowing that today I had to break up with Cole, so I invited him over and when he pulled up, I didn’t even take him inside. “Cole, I think it’s time you know that I have terminal cancer” I say. He didn’t say anything he just cried. “And I want you to break up with me. I need you to live your life” I say. “But we can stay together” he says. “Oh, we have to” I say and he kisses me and drives away. That night I had a dream that I was in the clouds and there was these kind little fairy’s dancing around me, it was like I could never wake up.

                                                                            .Cole Mar 4th.

The day after me and Ava broke up her mum came to our door and gave us the news. The next week we went to Ava’s funeral. Life without Ava was hard and miserable. I became depressed and all I did was just sit thinking or reading her favorite book to her grave.

I always gave her the prettiest roses but even the most beautiful ones die

                                                                               .The End.

Amazing work, Audrey! Remember, we want to celebrate success! So, remember, if your young person or someone you know has achieved some amazing things (both inside of school and outside), let us know!
