Science

Our Science students have started Term 2 strongly, with engaging classroom activities and exciting real-world learning experiences already taking place across a range of subjects.
In the first week of term, our Year 12 Psychology students travelled to Naarm on Wurundjeri Country to deepen their understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ways of knowing. Students participated in a guided walking tour from Federation Square to Birrarung Wilam, where they explored important Aboriginal landmarks, stories, and the cultural significance of the Birrarung (Yarra River). They also visited the Koorie Heritage Trust to view Aboriginal artefacts and artworks that reflected the importance of storytelling, relationships, spirituality, and connection to Country in Indigenous learning systems.
The excursion supported students in understanding how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander approaches to learning are deeply embedded in community, lived experience, observation, art, and connection to the environment. Students reflected on the differences between Indigenous and Western approaches to learning, particularly the emphasis on holistic, relational, and place-based learning experiences.
Our Year 9 students have been learning about homeostasis and control systems through a fun and challenging practical activity called Homer-o-stasis. Students worked to keep Homer Simpson’s “internal environment” stable, with water levels representing fluid balance, temperature representing body temperature, and colour representing the concentration of substances such as sugars and salts. The activity helped students understand how the body works to maintain stable internal conditions despite external changes.
Meanwhile, our Year 10 Chemistry students have continued investigating the properties and structures of ionic, covalent, and metallic substances, while Year 12 Chemistry students have been exploring equilibrium systems and how changing conditions can shift chemical equilibria.
It has been a fantastic start to the term, and we look forward to sharing more exciting learning experiences and achievements from our Science classes throughout Term 2.
