Respectful Relationships at Karoo Primary School
In the classroom
Across each year level, students participating in Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships (RRRR) have been exploring Topic 3 – Positive Coping. Please read below for the aims for each year level.
In Foundation, student activities within this topic area will assist students to:
• reflect on how they can manage strong emotional responses
• discuss ways that they can take responsibility for their actions when they feel strong emotions
• practise techniques to deal with feelings of fear and anger.
In Year 1 and Year 2, student activities within this topic area will assist students to:
• reflect on their emotional responses
• describe ways to express emotions that show awareness of the feelings and needs of others
• practise techniques to deal with feelings of fear, frustration and anger.
In Year 3 and Year 4, student activities within this topic area will assist students to:
• investigate how emotional responses vary in depth and strength
• identify and describe strategies to manage and moderate expression of emotions in a range of familiar and unfamiliar situations
• identify a range of productive coping strategies to use in different situations
• learn and practise self-calming techniques
• understand the value of a meaningful apology.
In Year 5 and Year 6, student activities within this topic area will assiststudents to:
• identify a range of coping strategies to help them deal with intense emotions
• identify the influence of self-talk on their actions and emotions.
Respectful Relationship Myths
Myth: The Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships teaching and learning materials are not age appropriate
Fact: The Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships teaching and learning materials were developed by leading education experts, who tailored the materials to each year level from Foundation to year 12 and made sure all information is age-appropriate and grounded in evidence.
Myth: Students will use the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships teaching and learning materials like a textbook
Fact: The Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships teaching and learning materials are designed to support teachers to deliver respectful relationships education in the classroom.
Teachers use their experience and knowledge to deliver this material in the most suitable way for their students. Materials were developed by nationally and internationally recognised experts from the University of Melbourne’s Graduate School of Education.
