Culture

Year 4 students recently participated in an engaging and informative presentation by PJ Morley and Aunty Dot, who shared their knowledge of Aboriginal culture, Country and community. Students learned that Country, Culture, People, and significant sites are all deeply connected. The importance of rivers, including the Namoi and Mooki Rivers, was highlighted as vital sources of water, food, travel and storytelling for Aboriginal families.
Students explored significant cultural sites such as Mullibah Lagoon, once a camping ground for the Red Chief Warrior and the Wallaby Trap, a traditional hunting area. They learned the importance of respect, particularly for sacred sites and Elders. The concept of culture was explained as everyday life, including language, ceremony and traditions.
The presentation also introduced Aboriginal seasonal knowledge, based on changes in plants, animals and weather rather than fixed calendars. Students discovered how materials from Country were used in the past and continue to be used today in art and education. Overall, students gained a deeper understanding that everything is connected, and that culture remains strong today.
Huge thanks to PJ Morley and Aunty Dot for visiting our school. We look forward to the next time you visit!
