Updates from our Pastoral Groups (Units)
This term, our Prep students have been exploring the big idea of “Our Home”, with a special focus on understanding our town and the people who help us. Through discussion, play, and hands-on experiences, students are beginning to develop a sense of where they belong in the wider community.
We started by asking, What is a town? Students shared their ideas and discovered that a town is a place where people live, work, and come together. From there, we explored what’s in our town, identifying familiar places such as homes, schools, parks, shops, and roads. This helped students recognise the many features that make our town a safe and connected place.
A big highlight of our learning has been discovering the people who help us. Students have been particularly engaged in learning about community helpers such as firefighters. They have also loved sharing and talking about the important jobs their parents do, including cutting hair, working in restaurants, caring for children in daycares, and managing busy households. These conversations have helped students see that there are many different ways people contribute to our community.
Role play has been a favourite activity in the classroom. Students have loved pretending to be firefighters—responding to emergencies, practising calling 000, and working together to “put out fires.” These playful experiences are helping them build confidence and understand how to act in real-life situations.
We are also growing our awareness of where we live. Students are learning that we live in Shepparton, which is in Victoria, which is in Australia. This is helping them develop a sense of place and belonging in the wider world.
It has been wonderful to see students so engaged and curious about their community. We look forward to continuing this learning journey together!

Come for breaky… second breakfast… or even third breakfast — all are welcome!
This week, our new Foundation students enjoyed trying out Breakfast Club for the first time and it’s safe to say they absolutely loved it! There were smiles, full tummies and a wonderful sense of community to start the day.
Breakfast Club is a beautiful way to gather, connect and ensure everyone begins the morning feeling nourished and ready to learn.
We look forward to welcoming more students as we continue to grow this special initiative.

Thank you to Bakers Delight City & Plaza who sponsors our St. Mel's Breakfast Club!
