The importance of Term 2

This term is the most important time to build momentum not only for primary but also for secondary students. It is an academic turning point, acting as the foundation for the school year’s heaviest workload and key assessments. For senior students particularly, this term is the most important time to build grit and precision in their work, build a study plan, and take the opportunity to improve marks.

It is crucial for increasing content knowledge and asking questions to build stronger understanding of the complexities of the work at hand. Once again, for senior students, this is the opportunity to finish strongly in Semester One, which will have a direct impact on their ATAR results through assessments. It is a vital period to evaluate progress, address learning gaps, and establish consistent study habits.

Starting Term Two, after Parent and Teacher Interviews, is an ideal opportunity to recalibrate and enter the term with a better focus on the work ahead. This is the perfect time for students to review their progress, identify weak areas, and seek help from the start of Term Two. Parents should also have a clearer understanding of their child’s experience from Term One and the improvements that need to be made. This is an ideal opportunity to build support and guidance from home that students can bring into their academic performance at school. For younger students, parents have a greater role in keeping in touch with the school to help in the process of learning and keeping a strong check on completion of work. Creating solid routines of study habits and providing a balance between school life and personal life is important.

Term Two is long enough to build real momentum and short enough that wasting time could lead to costly consequences for students. SACs and CATs are finalised within the first half of the term, and exams come into focus as the term finishes with report writing for secondary students.

For primary students, Term Two is important as they transition from settling in (Term One) to active and increased learning. Term Two focuses on building core literacy and numeracy skills, establishing consistent routines, increasing academic independence, and fostering social‑emotional maturity, allowing for deep engagement in academic and creative subjects.

Studies show it takes about sixty days to build a lasting habit. That’s basically a term. So, the routines built from late Term One—especially after Parent Teacher Interviews—until the time of Semester One exams are the ones that will carry students successfully into Year 12. Getting into the right rhythm and work ethic makes Term Two crucial.
