Co-Curricular

Goodbye, Farewell
A consistent element of my articles over the past 11 months has been to provide context through origin: how and why the College Crest and colours were created, the meaning and relevance of songs, the impact of worldviews on formation and opportunity, or the values and vision underpinning our co-curricular policies. Etymology is also important and interesting, because how can we communicate meaningfully when we do not have an agreed understanding of the terms we use?
Accordingly, the title of my final Especean entry needs quick unpacking.
Goodbye – God be with ye.
Farewell – May you travel well.
That is to say: On your journey through life, I hope that God guides your way.
My time at St Patrick’s College has been meaningful. The students, staff, parent community and culture and tradition were as I hoped and expected they would be, and Dr Lavorato and Mr Byrne provided me with excellent leadership and support. The role of Director of Co-Curricular has been fulfilling in its opportunity and challenge. We have so many diversely skilled people, all working so hard to provide students with opportunities to grow and experience success in its many forms. It has been a privilege to support them in planning and implementing their ideas and striving to achieve their goals. The Co-Curricular Program will continue to focus on mastery, in the pursuit of excellence, in fun environments.
I do not know exactly where I will be over the coming months, but I will be sure to attend the upcoming Musical Production on opening night and some of the winter sport fixtures. I look forward to seeing some of you around.
I am saddened and disappointed to be leaving the College so soon, but there are times when circumstances dictate our decisions – they don’t make them easier, only simpler.
In 2006, I watched a film called Bella. The opening line has been stuck in my head for 20 years: “If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.” I have been thinking about that quite a bit recently and came to find it is a version of an old Yiddish Proverb, “Man plans, God laughs.” It is such a strong reminder that we can get so caught up in trying to control outcomes instead of focusing on process. Throughout scripture and human history, meaning and purpose are forged on the journey. The destination is only part of the story.
God Bless.

Winter Co-Curricular Captains
It was my privilege at Friday’s assembly to announce the Captains of Co-Curricular for the following winter activities:
- Athletics and Cross Country - Cameron M
- Chess - Gregory S
- Debating - Oscar M
- Football - Laurence P
- Rugby - Alexander R
Tennis - Christopher M.
These boys were nominated by their respective MICs, who offered insights into the skills and leadership qualities attained through years of involvement in their programs. One of the key duties for these captains is providing our younger years with a point of contact for all things happening in their activity. The College Leadership Team were thrilled to support these appointments, and we all wish the boys every success this season.

Capturing the Action!
We are very fortunate to have some talented photographers in our community who generously give their time not only to capture our sporting moments, but also to share them with us all.
At Saturday’s First Rugby ISA opener against St Pius X, College, student photographer Nathan R (Year 11) and parent photographer Mr George Gittany both photographed the action and kindly made their images available to the College community.
To view and download the photos, please click on the photos below.
We sincerely thank all members of our community who contribute in this way and help celebrate the life of the College through their lens.
