With the winter season approaching a month in length and teams heading into Round 4, it is a good time to remind families and boys of the expectations for sport.

  • All boys should be at their venue 30 minutes prior to kick off. This might mean dropping your son off at the ground while parking is found. This time is important as it is an opportunity to warm up and prepare for the game and for coaches to make any changes that they may require.

  • Boys are to be in correct playing uniform when taking the fields. Boys playing in Rugby and AFL must have their mouthguards and will not be permitted to play without it. Footballers should all have shinpads on before running out.

  • When we play, we are supportive of our teammates. We all make mistakes, but it is the teams that support each other that overcome and push for the win. Those that get lost in pointing out mistakes often implode and lose games easily.

  • We never direct any comments to the opposition or referees/umpires. We focus on ourselves and our best performance, both as a team and individuals.

  • On the sidelines, our job is to lead by example. Praise and support our boys and teams. Be positive in our approach and leave the coaches to coach and the referees to control the game. We are role models that must set and keep the standards high.

Last week James (Year 6) played in the PSSA AFL competition, the only SPC representative in the team. In a challenging set of games, the NSWCIS team made it through to the finals. They were facing the previous year’s premiers from the Riverina. If you know AFL, you understand the number of outstanding players that have come from this area. In a thrilling match it was CIS that came out on top and won the carnival. A huge congratulations to James and his team on their success. I have also been told that James took the mark of the tournament, climbing high over the opposition to take a ‘specky.’

The Junior School Athletics Carnival will be held on Thursday 18 June on Breen Oval. The carnival is usually a warm and sunny day full of excitement and friendly competition with a flurry of house passion. Parents and carers are warmly invited to come and support the boys for part or the whole day. Seating is available on the Fraser Street side of the oval as boys will be spread throughout the stands surrounding Breen Oval.

Founder’s Day is fast approaching, possibly the best day in the school calendar. As Founder’s Day leads into the long weekend, there will be no Junior School games on Saturday 6 June. There are several disruptions in the week leading into and out of the long weekend and I expect that training will be impacted. More information will be released closer to the day.

Good luck to all our teams playing this weekend. I look forward to hearing about your experiences.
