Year 5 News

Reading

This fortnight in Reading, the Year 5 cohort has been focusing on making connections to texts. Students explored text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world connections to deepen their understanding of what they read.

They read a range of engaging texts, including stories about immigration, news articles about robot ninjas, and personal reflection pieces, which encouraged them to think about how texts relate to their own experiences, other texts, and the wider world. Students also had opportunities to share their own stories and perspectives, helping to build confidence and connectedness within the cohort.

Writing

From draft to published piece, the Year 5 cohort has been busy bringing their narratives to life. This fortnight, students focused on revising and editing their writing by improving their grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure, while also adding descriptive details to strengthen their stories.

They explored how authors refine their work through the editing process before sharing it with an audience. Students then published their final narratives, taking great pride in their effort, creativity, and growth as writers. It has been wonderful to see their confidence develop throughout the writing process.

Maths

Over the past fortnight, the students have continued their learning about decimals. They have explored rounding decimals and learning a rhyme to help them remember. (Find the place and look next door, 5 or more and raise the score, 4 or less and let it rest). They also have looked at how decimals are used in real life, from temperature to money, tracking time to measurement. The students have analysed decimals, compared them and ordered them to a set criteria.

The students practiced their communication skills, teamwork abilities and public speaking to prepare and share the research project. Well Done Year 5’s.

Social and Emotional Learning

Emotions can sometimes feel like a rollercoaster, and this fortnight the Year 5 cohort explored how to understand and manage the intensity of their emotions. Through Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), students discussed how feelings can change throughout the day and learned strategies to help them respond in positive and respectful ways.

They also focused on the importance of treating everyone with kindness and respect, including classmates, CRTs (Casual Relief Teachers), and other members of the school community. Students reflected on how their words and actions can positively impact others and how showing empathy helps build a safe and supportive environment.

This learning is strongly connected to our school values of kindness, responsibility, and resilience, as students continue to develop the skills needed to manage emotions and build positive relationships.

AUSLAN

This fortnight in AUSLAN, the Year 5 cohort explored how size can be communicated using hand shapes, finger positions, and facial expressions. Students learned how signs can change depending on the size of an object, for example showing how they would hold and drink from a small cup compared to a large mug.

This hands-on learning experience helped students understand how body language and expression play an important role in communication. It was wonderful to see the Year 5 cohort actively participating and building their confidence as they developed their AUSLAN skills.

Harmony Day

During this fortnight, the school recognised Harmony Day and celebrated the rich diversity within their school community. Students learned about the importance of inclusion, respect, and belonging, and how Australia is made up of people from many different cultures and backgrounds.

Through classroom discussions and activities, they reflected on how showing kindness, responsibility, and resilience helps create a welcoming environment where everyone feels valued. Harmony Day was a wonderful opportunity for the school to celebrate what makes each person unique while recognising the importance of standing together as a community.
