Year 3 News

Reading

Our Year 3 students have been exploring the three types of connections when reading; text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world. They have thoroughly enjoyed engaging in rich discussions and sharing the connections they have made between texts and their own lives.

Students have used mentor texts by Aaron Blabey, particularly from the Pig the Pug series, which has been a big hit in the classroom. Students listened to a variety of these stories and made thoughtful connections to the characters, such as Pig the Pug and Trevor. They were able to relate the characters’ experiences to real-life situations, helping to deepen their understanding and enjoyment of reading.

Writing

This fortnight, our Year 3 students have been busy developing their writing skills. A key focus has been on grammar and punctuation, with a special emphasis on the Latin root /port/, meaning “to carry.” Students explored a range of related words such as report, porter, and deport, and had fun discovering their meanings and how they are used in different contexts.

They have also continued to build strong writing habits through regular handwriting practice and by using our Writer’s Notebooks. Students have also implemented our Inquiry topic of the First Fleet into our writing lessons and written descriptive texts to see how it would feel to be part of the First Fleet journey, the students were very creative with this task.

Maths

This fortnight, the Year 3 students have been focusing on addition. They have explored a range of strategies including friends of 20, doubles, near doubles, and vertical addition. Throughout these lessons, students have been developing their understanding of key vocabulary such as vertical and near doubles.

Students have been applying their place value knowledge to support their work with vertical addition.  It has been wonderful to see some students extend their learning further by exploring regrouping in vertical addition.

Social and Emotional Learning

This fortnight, Year 3 students have been developing their social and emotional learning by exploring emotions and how they are experienced at school. Students discussed different feelings they may encounter throughout the day and identified strategies to help manage these emotions in positive ways. They participated in activities that encouraged empathy, self-awareness, and respectful communication with others. Students also practised recognising emotions in themselves and their peers, building skills to support positive relationships. In the final week of the term, Year 3 students will continue to apply these strategies in the classroom and reflect on their learning.

Special Event

Harmony Day

In the last fortnight, we celebrated a very special event Harmony Day! Students came dressed in their traditional outfits, proudly representing their cultures. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students and the CPS community to come together to celebrate and learn about the rich diversity around us.

In class, we discussed how Australia is a multicultural country that welcomes people from many different backgrounds. Students explored the importance of showing respect, inclusion, and valuing one another’s cultures.

Literacy Open Classroom

Last week, we had the wonderful opportunity to open our classrooms to families, inviting them to visit and observe our literacy lessons in action. It was a fantastic way for families to see the different types of learning that take place during our literacy block.

Our students demonstrated great resilience and responsibility, showcasing how we learn and work together in the classroom. They also enjoyed the special opportunity to engage and collaborate with their parents and carers.
