Year -1/2 Unit

What a great first few weeks of the school year we have had in Year1/2! All the students have settled in well into their classroom routines and it has been great to see new friendships forming in each class. 

Last week, the Year 1/2s started their first Inquiry unit for the year and have been introduced to their new topic ‘Inventions’ and how they impact the way we live. Students explored older inventions based around technology and asked questions about how they are used and we sequenced these inventions into a timeline. It was fascinating for students to learn how some of these inventions were operated. 

The students have continued to complete a variety of ‘Getting to Know You’ activities in order to introduce themselves to their new classmates and their new teachers. 

This year we will be introducing a healthy snack break program called ‘Sip and Crunch’. We have invited students to bring in a healthy snack such as fruit or vegetables in a small container to put on their table each morning. We will also be encouraging students to keep their water bottles on their tables or in a designated place to allow students easy access to hydration and nourishment during a short brain break each morning. 

In Reading and Writing, the Year 1/2s have started learning about procedural texts. We have been learning about the different parts of a procedure text. Next week, the Year 1/2s will be creating Lava Lamps as a class and will write a procedural text to write about ‘How to Make a Lava Lamp’. 

In Maths, students have been working on skip counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. They have experimented with skip counting from different starting points and recognising the patterns in number sequences. This week we have started learning about place value and using concrete materials to make numbers. 

Students will be bringing their Magic Words home shortly. We are asking students to practise these words alongside doing their home reader each day, or as regularly as possible.
