Sustainability Schools Program

The Southern Grampians Shire Council launched the Sustainability Schools Competition to address environmental challenges, promote sustainability, and support the circular economy. Students engaged with real-world issues affecting their community, with the winning team receiving $20,000 from the Council to bring their proposal to life.
Proposal 1: Regarden the Garden
This project aims to transform the Hamilton Botanical Gardens into a carbon-offset hub by planting native vegetation and establishing a community vegetable garden. The initiative will reduce the town’s carbon footprint, provide fresh produce for locals, and generate economic benefits through sustainable practices.
Proposal 2: Regeneration of Patterson Park
We propose revitalising Patterson Park by planting trees and creating a multifunctional space for community events. This project will enhance the park’s appeal, promote biodiversity, and attract more visitors, contributing to Hamilton’s environmental and social sustainability.
Proposal 3: Community Mural Space
This project will turn under-utilised public spaces into vibrant mural art showcases that reflect the region's culture and diversity. Engaging the community and promoting cultural tourism will beautify the area, empower local artists, and support the local economy.
I commend all the Monivae College students who participated in the Sustainability Schools Competition. Their commitment to community-focused, altruistic solutions reflects the values of a Monivae graduate, and I am incredibly proud of the compassionate and socially responsible students we have at Monivae College.
