It’s hard to believe we’ve already kicked off the 2025 school year! The students have returned with such enthusiasm for learning and have quickly settled into their routines. It’s been wonderful hearing about all the exciting adventures they had over the holidays.
In Literacy, the students have been delving into their teachers’ favourite texts. They’ve engaged in a variety of activities related to the books, deepening their understanding and enjoyment of reading. They’ve also been exploring how to write a recount of their holiday experiences, sharing the many things they’ve been up to.
In Maths, the students have been exploring data—learning how to collect and record data. They have been learning about how to make tally marks, ask questions to gather information and record the responses given. The students have enjoyed engaging in a range of activities that have related to number. They enjoyed the hands on learning and the variety of number activities they engaged in.
In Religion, the students have been learning about the Year of Jubilee, discovering that it occurs every 25 years and reflects themes of hope and forgiveness. They explored the symbolism of the Holy Door, understanding how it represents a pathway to renewal. The students created their own Holy Door, each reflecting their hopes and aspirations for the year 2025. Additionally, they worked on crafting a group prayer, writing it together on what they wished to ask God for as a learning group.
It’s been an exciting start to the term!

The Year 3's are exploring books written by Mem Fox, they are making predictions, discussing characters, settings and events using both vocabulary and illustrations to gather information. The Year 4's are investigating books written by Leigh Hobbs. They are developing their understanding by using storylines, ideas and relationships between characters to build literal and inferred meanings. In writing the students are focusing on how to write a narrative. They are using alliteration and describing words to create their characters.

Learning Centre Three
Welcome to all the prep families who have started their school journey with us this year. We have all had a great start to the year and it is wonderful to see so many smiling faces enter the learning spaces each morning.
The preps have been getting to know their teachers and making new friends and are becoming familiar with the school routine. It has been great to see how settled and eager they all are to participate in a variety of activities throughout the day.
In Literacy, the preps have been learning about the sound /m/ and have begun reading the book Milo's Birthday Surprise. Each week, as we learn new sounds, we will meet a new character in the story. They have been exploring different words that have an /m/ sound and practicing writing Mm.
The preps then began to look at texts and the range of ways that we can respond and explore those stories that we’ve read. They have participated in a range of language experiences relating to the texts - The Monster’s Party, Pet Shop and The Hungry Giant’s Lunch. We will continue to explore those texts over the coming weeks. The students then began exploring concepts about print by learning to locate the front cover, title and back cover.
During maths, the preps have been exploring patterns. They have been learning that a pattern has a unit of repeat. Students have practiced this by copying, continuing and making their own colour patterns using linking cubes, movement patterns using their bodies and shape patterns using blocks.
In religion, students have been learning about the Holy Door and linking it to their own school-based faith journey that they have recently entered at Our Lady of the Southern Cross. The preps have participated in learning walks around the school where they have looked at a variety of symbols that represent our Catholic faith, such as the prayer table in our learning space and symbols in the school foyer.
Just a reminder that prep assessments will continue on Wednesdays. If you have not already, please book a time for your child to attend a 45 minute session with their teacher.
