The Power of Habits: Supporting Student Wellbeing Through Values

As students progress through their schooling, success is often linked to goals and aspirations. However, from a wellbeing perspective, what also shapes a young person’s development are the daily routines and habits that guide their behaviour, particularly those that are grounded in strong personal values.

A habit is a behaviour repeated regularly, often becoming automatic over time. Our brains naturally seek efficiency, meaning that when an action is repeated consistently, it requires less effort and thought. This is why habits play such an important role in shaping how students approach their learning, relationships, and overall wellbeing.

The habits students develop are often underpinned by the values they hold. Values such as responsibility, perseverance, respect, and integrity influence the routines students create in their daily lives. When habits are aligned with positive values, they support both academic growth and emotional resilience.

Small habits may seem insignificant in the moment, but their impact grows over time. Simple routines such as organising school materials, setting aside regular study time, maintaining healthy sleep patterns, and managing digital distractions can significantly reduce stress and increase confidence. These habits help students feel more prepared and in control of their learning.

Research and educational practice show that students with positive habits often experience greater focus, improved motivation, and reduced anxiety, particularly during busy academic periods. Good habits also minimise last-minute panic and support a calmer, more organised approach to learning.

By encouraging students to reflect on their habits and the values that guide them, we support their development as confident, resilient, and self-aware learners, capable of navigating both school and life with balance and purpose.
