Book of the Week
The mushroom in the sky
by Jackie French
Mushroom in the sky is a fantastic story set in Australia during the Second World War, following a girl who loves dogs and a boy who ends up being taken prisoner by Japanese soldiers. If you’re familiar with Jackie French’s books, or love animals, this is a must-read for you!
14-year-old Kat promises to care for Lucky, a loveable dog owned by 16-year-old Ossie, who has lied about his age to join the army and fight against Japan. Lucky is a very special dog, who helps Kat settle into her new life in the country, and enables her to catch glimpses of Ossie’s experiences throughout the war.
Ossie faces danger and hardship after he becomes a prisoner of war, but he also witnesses great acts of kindness, and that is the true strength of this story. Back home, Kat becomes more confident in herself as she works to help Mrs Plum, a very kind old lady caring for the dogs of soldiers gone to fight overseas. There are many characters you will easily fall in love with as they face suffering, prejudice, and unimaginable tragedy throughout the war, and it is their courage and compassion that makes this story unforgettable.
