Learning Highlights

Morning coffee, anyone?
Our staff enjoyed the chance to spend some time in the Cafe recently, with our VET Certificate II in Cookery students showing off their skills and offering some delicious breakfast options for staff to purchase.
Warm coffee with a delicious egg and bacon roll, what a fantastic way to start a Friday!
Recycle Rewards for
Timor-Leste
We are pleased to announce that members of the MacKillop Catholic College Community will now be able to select the MacKillop Timor-Leste Campaign as a charity to support using the Recycle Rewards program.
These funds help support the College in our annual Timor-Leste trip, that provide sports equipment, laptops and musical instruments to rural schools. We continue to fundraise to support internet access, learning resources and community‑led projects.

Close the Gap
Our MKC Mob hosted a lunchtime BBQ to raise money for the Close the Gap campaign, which aims to create initiatives to close the gap in health, education, and opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
This is part of the MKC Mob's work to raise awareness, promote cultural understanding, and support meaningful action toward reconciliation in our community.
Making Jesus Real: Year 7 Presentation and Small Group Sessions
Our Year 7 cohort was fortunate to have Marty Ogle present to them on Thursday 19 March, followed by Core class sessions on Monday 23 and Wednesday 25 March, respectively.
We share with you some comments from Marty below about his shared experience with our Year 7 students:
What a delight it was to speak to the Year 7 students and staff at a special assembly about how important RESPECT is and how we need to ensure that we find ways to demonstrate it at school, home and in the community. One point that was stressed, is that we can't just talk about RESPECT, we have to put 'words into action'. We spoke about back chatting at home and the need to start acting in a maturer manner, but it was pleasing to hear that at school this bad habit is rarely seen.
It was also pleasing to visit individual classes to back up what had been spoken about at the assembly. We looked at role models who inspire RESPECT, plus discussed the need to take care of our bodies in regard to vaping, smoking and drugs. It was really pleasing to see how well the students from various primary schools have gelled together and some even came up with ideas to raise funds for Project Compassion.
Live Jesus in your Heart & your Actions
Marty Ogle
We are grateful for Marty's work on this important topic and hope to see our Year 7 students develop the concepts of RESPECT and KINDNESS in their everyday interactions and decisions.
Year 11/12 Sport Science
Our Year 11/12 Sport Science class recently had the exciting opportunity to spend the day in Launceston and visit the University of Tasmania (UTAS) facility, 'The Shed' at the Inveresk Campus.
Students enjoyed participating in fitness testing utilising the new state-of-the-art equipment available, and a tour of the building that caters for UTAS students in Agricultural Sciences, Health Sciences, Nursing, Nutrition, Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences.
Trying out new sports in Duke of Ed!
As part of our Duke of Edinburgh program, our Year 9 students had the opportunity to try out wheelchair basketball and wheelchair AFL today. As they learnt how to roll, stop and move using their wheelchairs, it was wonderful to see students giving something new a go and cheering on their peers with a little bit of competitive spirit.
A big thank you to ParaQuad Association of Tasmania Inc. for their assistance in organising and running this session, the students absolutely loved it!
Volleyball fun!
The gym was a hive of activity today with the highly anticipated staff v students volleyball game taking place.
With a final score of 44-35, the staff walked away with a hard-fought win. Hopefully, the student team can rise to the challenge set next year.
Well done to all who participated and joined in on the fun.
Sunshine Coast Dance Eisteddfod
Sunshine Coast Dance Eisteddfod preparations have been in full swing since October! Our dedicated students have been working incredibly hard, rehearsing during lunchtime and after school to perfect their routines. This year, our troupe will perform four group routines, and several students will also be showcasing their talents through solo performances. We depart on May 5th, and as this is our third year attending the Eisteddfod, we wish all students the very best as they represent the College with pride, teamwork, and passion.
Our Year 7 and 8 Dance Troupe preparations are also well underway. The group has grown remarkably this year, with 40 enthusiastic students involved. A wonderful reflection of how popular dance has become at the College. We feel incredibly fortunate to have such talented, committed, and joyful young dancers in our community.
Recently, our Year 10 Dance students attended a specialised session at Strong Pilates, while our Year 11 and 12 students took part in a Hot Mat Pilates class at Club 42. At Strong Pilates, students focused on cardiovascular fitness and strength training using reformer-style equipment. At Club 42, the seniors completed a traditional mat Pilates session in a heated room, challenging their core strength, alignment, and endurance.
These excursions connect directly with our focus on Safe Dance Practices, highlighting how strong technique, core stability, and muscle conditioning help dancers prevent injuries, recover effectively, and care for their bodies both inside and outside the dance studio.
We are incredibly proud of all our dancers and look forward to an exciting year of creativity, commitment, and performance.

Still-Life Photography
Students in Term 1, Yr10 Media Arts have been studying Vanitas and the tradition of Still-Life through photography. Following some research on Australian photographer Marian Drew, students have themselves began composing still-lifes using objects significant to them aiming to convey a sense of the 'passage of time'.
Using our Canon Gx7 Mkii cameras on manual mode and tripods students have developed skills in using extremely slow shutter speeds, small aperture and 'painting with light' using torches. We're looking forward to seeing these works printed large scale and displayed later in the year.

SATIS Athletics success!
Congratulation to all students who travelled up to Launceston earlier in the week, to compete at the SATIS Athletics Carnival.
We are excited to announce that MacKillop placed 1st in the U16 Boys Pennant. It was wonderful to see students cheering on their peers and trying their best.
Well done to all who represented the College with pride and participated, and thank you to the staff who supported this event.
Learning on the farm
Recently, students in the Learning Hub had the exciting opportunity to travel to Strathallen at Tea Tree, a farm operated by Walter and Pete Thompson, and experience farm life first-hand.
During the visit the group fed the sheep, played with Wesley the kelpie and 'drove' the tractors.
Walter showed students where the sheep were shorn, the dam and the silos full of different grains.
Easter Egg Competition
Students were given a basic egg shape as a base for their creativity, we were so excited to receive a variety of entries.
1st Place Harriet James
2nd Place Aimira Page
3rd Place Pavneet Kaur
Congratulations to these students, and we hope you enjoy your tasty prizes 😋
Flag Football Fun
This week our NFL Flag Football team competed in the Tasmanian Championships for the chance to travel to Queensland to compete at Nationals.
After an impressive display of skill the MacKillop team landed in 3rd place, after a tough semi-final. A big thank you to Mr Lucas Peters for his efforts in leading the team and well done to all students involved for their excellent sportsmanship and representing MacKillop with pride.
