Freeman

House Leader Introduction

On behalf of our Freeman Staff, I would like to welcome back students and families for the 2024 school year. Welcome to our 75 new Year 7 Freeman students who have joined us this year, we hope you have settled in well and are enjoying your time in the best House in the school.

Welcome to Mr Halkidis, Ms Yeh, Mr Hartje, Ms Ji, Ms Liousas, Mr Vuong and Mr Li who are new to Blackburn and have joined Freeman House. We also welcome Ms Bloomfield and Mr Pasquali who have joined us from other houses.

Term 1 is always a busy term and 2024 is no different. We managed to reclaim the win in Swimming Sports and a third place in House Performing Arts which is a fantastic way to start the year. Congratulations to all students involved and we are so proud of what our house was able to produce, and it is all down to the contribution and effort of our students.

We are looking forward to the upcoming Athletics Carnival where we hope for another win to end the term.

Our Year 12’s have received their Rugby jumpers in Mentor group and have made a positive start to the 2024 year and we hope that they maintain their level of motivation and effort in their final year of VCE.

We recently completed our House Fundraiser which raised money for the Community Spirit Foundation

Thank you to the Freeman student leaders who assisted on the day and thank you to all students for participating in the day and contributing to over $2000 raised for our chosen charity.

On behalf of the Freeman House, I would like to wish all families a safe and restful Term 1 break.

Mr Tobin - Freeman House Leader

Assistant House Leader Introductions

Mr Kariyawasam-Mallawithantri

I specialise in teaching mathematics and have experience working with students from year 7 to year 12.

Prior to pursuing a career in teaching, I worked as a software developer. I love travelling and maintaining an active lifestyle.

I believe that my sense of humour plays a key role in engaging students during my lessons. I am excited to be taking on a Freeman Assitant House Leader position and look forward to collaborating with both students and families to support them in achieving their goals.

Ms Wilkins

I have been teaching for 5 years at Blackburn and am a VCE Psychology teacher and a Junior (7-10) HPE teacher. Over the last few years, I have been a Freeman mentor to the wonderful F4 mentor group.

I really enjoy getting to know the students, celebrating their achievements and having a positive start to the day with those students. In 2024 I have started my new role as an Assistant House Leader in Freeman, my role has been specifically to get to know the F11-F14 students and oversee any concerns. I have been enjoying getting to know more students throughout the Freeman House and working alongside the other Freeman teachers and leadership team. If you haven't met me or introduced yourself to me, please say hi! I look forward to what 2024 will bring.

 Ms Bloomfield

As a second-year teacher at Blackburn, I specialise in teaching Food Studies and Sport. I find immense joy in the vibrant ambiance of Blackburn and the daily smiles on the faces of many students. Outside of school, I lead an active lifestyle, enjoying running and following AFL. I also cherish spending downtime with family and friends, finding it essential for recharging and maintaining a balanced life. Something I am looking forward to in this role of Assistant House Leader is getting to know all the Freeman students and working closely with different staff members.

House Captain – Mirando C

Hi, my name is Miranda  and I am the 2024 Freeman House Captain. I am exceedingly grateful to be a part of the Blackburn High School community and for the opportunities it has offered me both to my education and in leadership positions. Freeman House is a warm and welcoming community which I am very proud to be a part of. As Freeman House Captain I strive to continue and develop the enthusiastic, inclusive community that runs throughout all areas of the house. I aim to achieve this by encouraging collaborative, friendly competition within and between mentor groups as well as other houses to build stronger bonds between students and their peers. Freeman’s enthusiastic nature was recently exhibited in our exciting triumph at the Swimming Carnival and our fantastic efforts in Freeman’s production of Beauty and the Beast. We look forward to working with our Mentor Leaders to produce a successful Freeman House Fundraiser on March 8th and to Athletics day where we hope to once again reign victorious!
