The fabulous scientists in Year 3 & 4 have been participating in the Birds in Schools program offered by Birdlife Australia. Students have worked as biologists to learn all about the local birds in our school environment and their current habitat including food and nesting opportunities. Students have conducted environmental site surveys and discovered that we have birds such as Magpies, Cockatoos, Galahs, Rainbow Lorikeets, and more in our school grounds. In the upcoming weeks students will be working on their action plans to further enhance our local school environment to make it better for our local birds.
The wonderful scientists in Year 5 & 6 have been learning all about how the growth and survival of living things are affected by the physical conditions of their environment. To explore this concept students have planned and conducted their own experiments exploring the growth of bean plants in different growing conditions including sugary water, salt water, no sunlight, less water, more water, hot or cold water, and more. Students are now working on the STEM design challenge of planning the vegetable garden and outdoor learning space that will be made at Karoo this year.
On Monday the 4th March the Science and Environment Captains Hannah and Xibi, with support from the Green Team, ran Clean Up Australia Day at Karoo. This was a fantastic day to educate students about the environmental impacts of rubbish in our school environment. Congratulations to 6M who collected the most rubbish on the day and won the trophy!
