Maths Lesson Update!

Our maths lessons at St Patrick’s in 2024 have had a makeover! With a large focus on revising and expanding our knowledge and ensuring our students stay engaged and excited for maths. There have been two big changes to our Maths blocks with the implementation of Think Mentals Maths warm-up and the Maths Daily Review Revision.

In our Maths lessons across all classrooms we hope to ensure our students are following the same routine with consistency, opportunities and engagement. To do so all classrooms ensure they are doing the following:

What does Think Mentals Maths look like?

At the beginning of each lesson for 5 minutes, Student’s complete number revision in their ‘Think mentals maths books’. They are focusing on revising their knowledge and fine-tuning their number skills. It’s a great opportunity for students to warm-up for their maths lessons and retrieve number concepts they’ve learned in the past. This is completed across the whole-school in each maths lesson. See our hard-working students being super-focused during this maths warm-up.

What does Maths Daily Review look like?

Our maths review is completed daily for 10 minutes of each lesson. The students use mini whiteboards to demonstrate their learning and answer maths related questions. Our components of the daily review include:

  • Warm-up
  • Number-Sense Review
  • Vocabulary Review
  • Recap
  • Apply

When completing our Maths Daily Review the students are given the opportunity to access prior knowledge revise mathematical concepts to ensure they get solidified rather than forgotten.

Why is revising a maths concept important for our students?:

What are our Students and Teachers saying about our new maths approach?:

Our staff hope that with the implementation of  Think Mental Maths and Maths Daily Review that in all classrooms we prime students' minds for learning, reinforce prior knowledge, and set a positive tone for the math lesson. We aim to contribute to an effective and efficient learning environment, and especially to encourage our Students to develop and maintain a LOVE for mathematics!!!
