ACE FOUNDATION – GLASSES PROGRAM

The ACE Foundation was established by Chair,

Dr Leon Shapero, in 2014.

The ACE Vision is to assist students of any age in the City of Casey who are experiencing significant challenges in their educational pursuits.

One of the ACE Foundation initiatives is to provide FREE eye testing and provision of FREE glasses for all public students with vision impairment in the City of Casey.

If you have a current Health Care Card, and feel your child may need assistance, please contact Tracey Logonder at Hampton Park Secondary College on 8795 9400 for further information.

For 2 weeks in February, we were lucky to have Student Eye Care services give eyesight checks to students.

This was a free service and the Optometrist, Leonie, saw nearly 100 students during this time.

Thanks to Student Eye Care for your help!

HEALTH POP UPS

The nurses Prue & Kaye arrange Health Pop Up’s each term focusing on various themes – Sunsmart, hydration, healthy eating, mental health, sexual health, drugs & alcohol, safe partying. The Health Pop Up initiative was conceived to focus on targeting key areas of health need amongst the student population.  Age-appropriate health information is put on display and giveaways and handouts are available along with activities appropriate to the theme.

On Tuesday 5th March we held a SUNSMART Health Pop Up in the presentation space in Walton House – see pics below! We had a great time promoting SunSmart behaviour and focusing on the importance of hydration. About 200 students dropped past and lots of FREE sunscreen was given away. Student were encouraged to download the Sunsmart Global UV App so they can keep informed about what time of the day sun protection is needed.

More Health Pop Ups are being planned for Term 2!

App features

  • UV and sun protection alerts each day.
  • Live UV levels across Australia and the world.
  • Option to create unique alerts that suit your schedule and location.
  • Access worldwide UV levels that can be tailored to your specific location.
  • Seven-day forecast of sun protection times and weather information.
  • Available in eight languages including English, French, Spanish, Dutch, Chinese, German, Italian and Russian.

How does the app work?

The SunSmart Global UV app provides reliable real-time and forecast UV levels for locations from reputable and trusted agencies and translates this data into evidence-based health advice from Cancer Council Victoria to recommend sun protection for your location.

It uses forecast information from the  Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) and live UV data from the  Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) to provide sun protection times across Australia and the world.

TALKING TO YOUR TEEN ABOUT VAPING

Check out this new resource from VIC HEALTH - Vaping Conversation Guide for Parents.

This guide can help you have a meaningful, non-threatening conversation with your teen about vaping.

A parent’s opinion really matters to teens. Some teens don’t vape because they don’t want to disappoint their parents. Letting them know that you think vaping is a poor decision can be enough to deter many teens from ever trying.

It helps if your views about vaping are informed, based on facts, and conveyed in a relaxed and non-confrontational way.
