Science Week

National Science Week 14th–23rd August

National Science Week is Australia's annual celebration of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). This year's theme is “Seeds of science: Nurturing knowledge for all”, celebrating the idea that curiosity, questioning and discovery help science grow in all of us.

Throughout the week, students across our school will have the opportunity to further discover that science is all around us. Our STEM Leaders, Oliver and Zoe, will be running some science activities for students during recess throughout the week, encouraging curiosity, creativity and a love of discovery.

Science doesn't just happen in the classroom, it can happen at home too! Here are a few simple activities families can enjoy together using everyday household items:

• Rainbow Milk – Add a few drops of food colouring to milk, then touch the surface with a cotton bud dipped in dishwashing liquid and watch the colours swirl.

• Nature Treasure Hunt –See how many different leaves, flowers, feathers, insects or interesting rocks you can find outside. Talk about their colours, textures and patterns.

• Kitchen Sink or Float – Gather a selection of fruit and vegetables (or other kitchen items) and predict whether they will sink or float before testing them in a bowl of water.

• Build a Paper Bridge – Using only paper, see how many coins your bridge can hold. Can you redesign it to make it stronger?

• Shadow Hunt – Head outside and observe how shadows change throughout the day.

We hope National Science Week inspires our students to stay curious, ask questions and keep exploring the amazing world around them!
