Year 5/6

Year 5/6 Cluster News

Dear Families,

Thank you to all those who were able to attend the Parent Information Night. For those who were unable to come, we have sent home a hard copy of the information that was shared.

Please read through this and send through any questions that you may have. In the coming days, you will receive an iPad agreement. This will need to be read through by parents together with child. Both parent(s) and child will need to sign the iPad agreement to show that they understand the expectations that come with using an iPad in Year 5/6.

Home Inquiry:

We begin our first unit of inquiry in Week 3. To support this, can you please discuss the changes that have occurred in your child's life. You can think about what has caused these changes and what these changes have caused.

In Spelling next week, we will be inquiring into:

  • Year 5 - words ending in 'nge'
  • Year 6 - Prefix meaning '2' - bi, di, du
  • What words can you think of that share the sound for your year level?

Literacy:

The students are beginning to build our class routines and understandings related to how Readers’ and Writers’ Workshop will work this year. Students have also begun reading and we are excited to be able to build their stamina in reading and writing. Writing will be a choice of narrative (story) writing. Our spelling will take on an inquiry approach as we aim to build curiosity and engagement in how words are related, connected and used.

Maths:

We have been looking at how we can read large numbers. During the coming week, we will continue to build our mental computation strategies and move onto mathematical operations.

Camp:

We don’t have long to go now! Please help your child by setting them up with some practice that will enable camp to be enjoyable for them. Some things you can do at home are:

  • Practise sleeping in their sleeping bag on their bed and then somewhere else at home. This may need several tries so that children feel comfortable.
  • Practise any routines to help your child be independent in such things as dressing, showering, preparing for bed, keeping their belongings within their bag etc

A reminder of what to bring:

  • Water bottle (to refill)
  • Wide Brim hat
  • Sleeping bag/blanket and pillow (fitted single sheet optional)

Try to pack sensibly (one medium sized bag only). Remember we are going away for 2 nights, not two weeks!  PLEASE NAME EVERYTHING .

Emergency Contact:   If you need to contact your child at camp (emergency only), call the GGLPS front office on 8282 6000 who will then contact us. After hours, you may contact on 0419832654.

Please ensure your child has working headphones and a keyboard. The iPad keyboard will be important in the development of keyboard skills which will be part of their class learning. The headphones will be regularly used in class for a variety of purposes. Both items will be necessary for Year 5s to complete NAPLAN. Again, thank you for helping with this.

Yours sincerely,
