5th Sunday in Ordinary Time
A Reading from the Gospel of Mark 1:29-39
As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of Simon and Andrew. Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her.
So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her, and she began to wait on them. That evening after sunset, the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. The whole town gathered at the door, and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was.
Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. Simon and his companions went to look for him, and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!”
Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.” So he travelled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.
The Gospel of the Lord
Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ
In this Gospel story, Jesus heals Simon's mother-in-law, demonstrating compassion and divine power. The passage highlights Christ's ministry of healing and service. After sunset, the sick and possessed flock to him, symbolising our universal need for healing. Jesus responds by curing diseases and casting out demons, emphasising his authority over both physical and spiritual realms.
His early morning prayer reveals a deep connection with the Father, emphasising the importance of solitude and communion with God. Overall, Mark emphasises healing, compassion, and the essential balance between outward service and inner spiritual nourishment.
Reflect on a time when you experienced healing, whether physical, emotional, or spiritual. How did that experience impact your faith and understanding of God's power to restore and renew?
Jesus prioritised prayer and preaching despite the demands of healing and popularity. In your own life, how do you balance responsibilities, commitments, and the need for solitude and connection with God?
Loving Creator, as we reflect on Mark’s words, we are reminded of Your healing touch and the importance of seeking solitude in prayer. Grant us the wisdom to seek communion with You. May we follow Jesus' example, recognising the divine purpose in our lives. Strengthen us to proclaim Your word and demonstrate Your love.
We make this prayer through Christ, Our Lord
Amen
