Numeracy

Welcome
We are excited to welcome Melanie Soklevski, an experienced Mathematics teacher, to our Maths faculty. Melanie has already made a positive impression on our students.
In a previous iNewsletter, I discussed the difference between Mathematics and Numeracy. The key distinction is that Mathematics focuses on technical skills, while Numeracy involves the real-world application of those skills. With this in mind, Melanie has already been getting the Year 11 VM Numeracy class hands-on with applying their knowledge. Currently, students are working through the Recreational Numeracy topic, with a specific focus on developing measurement skills.
To support this learning, Melanie took the class to the kitchen to bake brownies, allowing students to demonstrate their understanding of measurement in a practical and engaging way. Three different recipes were trialled, including regular brownies, cookie dough brownies, and brownies made from a packet mix. Each group was happy to sample their creations and thoroughly enjoyed applying their numeracy skills to this recreational activity.
Melanie has also engaged students in a range of other hands-on learning activities throughout this topic, including creating Bauhaus Design School-inspired posters, producing scale drawings of sports fields, and using the grid method to scale up images by hand.
Junior Maths Tutoring
Is your child in Year 7 or 8? Would they benefit from some additional help to either support or extend their learning?
We are again running our afterschool Maths tutoring program. Our amazing VCE students will tutor the juniour students in the library afterschool.
This is not a drop-in event and students must sign up to gain a place, as they will be assigned a tutor.
This amazing opportunity is completely free. To take advantage, please email me your students full name and grade and how you feel they would benefit from this initiative: leanne.zammit@education.vic.gov.au
Some updates and Reminders in Maths
- In 2026 the minimum mark to demonstrate a satisfactory understanding of content, on all assessments across the school, has been raised from 40% to 50%.
- In years 7-10 students will undertake a range of assessments (tests and assignments). During these assessments, students are permitted to use their reference book and calculator (replicating VCE conditions).
- Marks and feedback is provided to students and parents/carers via compass learning tasks in line with our continuous reporting procedures.
- Students in Years 7-9 take part in the online Maths Mate program called Squizya. This is a weekly homework worksheet that students are required to complete. It allows them to continually apply their understanding of a range of skills in a cyclical manner. This supports students in moving that understanding to their long term memory.
- Year 11 and 12 - students are required to keep an up to date reference book in all maths subjects which is used in assessments including exams (VCAA exams included for some). Additionally, all students require a CAS calculator to demonstrate their understanding of Outcome 3 - to use technology effectively to solve, analyse and interpret mathematical problems.
