Glenn the Junk Man

Glenn the Junk Man came to visit our preschool on Wednesday. He brought big sticks, mud, old go kart tires, a magnetic water wall, and plenty of other clean recycled materials.

Before going outside, Glenn explained how to safely use the items he brought with him, then he gave the children 2 rules. The first rule was to keep themselves and their friends safe. The other rule was that they had to play.

The children all found things they loved, and things that challenged them, like putting their hands in the mud. At the end of the session when we asked the children what their favourite part was, most of them said, “The mud!” We enjoy getting messy and engaging in sensory play at preschool.

Some children enjoyed the tyre swing Glenn made using an old go kart tyre and a long rope, and everyone worked together to move big sticks, ropes, old material, and pipes to make houses. They even found a way to add telephones between the houses using a pipe.

While they were building, the children found some spiders and insects in the garden.

Glenn pulled out his pocket spider book and showed the children how to find out if a spider is dangerous or not. He then shared stories of spiders he has found on his adventures around Australia.

We are looking forward to building our own collection of clean loose parts to continue the learning Glenn started with us.

We have invited Glenn back later this year to share his loose parts with us again.
