Year 1/2 Unit

Congratulations to all our 1/2s on a terrific start to the year! All the students have settled in well into their classroom routines and it has been great to see new friendships forming in each class. 

We have been refamiliarizing ourselves with our School Values, ‘Be Responsible, Be Respectful, Be Safe and Be a Learner’ to highlight the expectations in the classroom and around our school. We have also engaged in a variety of ‘Get to Know You’ activities to learn about everyone’s strengths and interests.

This year we will be continuing our regular, healthy snack break program called ‘Sip and Crunch’ (Brain Food). We invite students to bring in a healthy snack such as, fruit or vegetables in a small container to put on their table each morning. We will also be encouraging students to keep their water bottles on their tables or in a designated place to allow students easy access to hydration and nourishment during a short brain break each morning. 

In Literacy, we have commenced our Reading and Writing program and explicitly taught the expectations in these sessions as well as using equipment and resources in the classroom appropriately. Students have enjoyed using their Writer’s Notebooks as a brainstorming tool and visual aid for writing ideas and sentence construction.  

In Maths, students have enjoyed exploring numbers connected to their life and how to use resources for Mathematics lessons. Students have also had revision of our Numeracy teaching and learning model and how our Maths lessons are structured in Year1/2. We have commenced a Counting unit focusing on subitising, counting patterns and skip counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. They have experimented with skip counting from different starting points and recognising the patterns in number sequences. In the coming weeks, we will be working on place value and using concrete materials to make numbers.  

We also look forward to meeting parents during our upcoming ‘Meet and Greet’ conferences in Week 4. Keep an eye on Compass notifications for information related to this.
