The Learning Zone

Spotlight on Mathematics

Early Stage 1 have been having lots of fun learning all about mass. They had the chance to compare objects using balance scales and estimate which objects they felt would be heaviest and why.

Stage 1 have been exploring the world of area. They have been creating arrays to build the connection to multiplication and using a range of objects to locate the area of spaces.

Stage 2 have had great fun putting their knowledge of the properties of 3D objects into practice when they built their own 3D objects using marshmallows and skewers.

Stage 3 have been focusing on area for the last few weeks. Students have been able to use their understanding of multiplicative relations to support their understanding of how to calculate the area of rectangles, parallelograms, triangles and composite shapes.  There has been some fantastic work happening with students working with a range of real life situations that allow them to practice their new skills from building fences and chook sheds to designing school playgrounds.

 Brain Olympia

On Wednesday 26th August 2024, 16 of our Primary students travelled to Inverell to participate in the Brain Olympia event. The day consisted of several components. The initial event was a trivia round on the topics of English, Science, HSIE and Famous people and Places, which proved challenging, even for the staff present. The second event was a mathematical problem solving round, where teams had to work together to gain the most points for their working out and correct answers. The next section was a public speaking competition on the topic "If I could change 3 things in the world...', this required teams to collaboratively write the speech and choose one member to present it to the audience of over 100 people. Finally, the teams had to produce a dramatic performance which ended with the words "We should have listened" to perform on stage for all attendees.

Congratulations to Guyra Team White: Mia Waters, Chaise Martin, Oskar Laing, Ricky-Jay Foster, Charlie Bavea, George Hope, Darcy Sisson and Catie Furphy who were in the Small Schools winning team and who are now invited to participate in the finals in Gunnedah on the 11th September.

Congratulations also to Guyra Team Lemon: Matthew Sauer, Ned Newberry, Lachlan Rosser, Peter Grills, Benji Archibald, Kirby Nugent, Scarlett Newberry and Christopher Welsh who worked well together, particularly in the drama section.

Thank you to all the participants for their exemplary manners on the day and their willingness to try new things. Also, a big thank you to the parent/grandparent chauffeurs that made the day possible.

Best wishes to Guyra Team White for the final event.
