Art

Welcome to Term 3! We hope you're enjoying the creative journeys your children are embarking on in our art classes. Here are some important updates and reminders for this month:

Art Smocks Needed

As our budding artists dive into their projects, it's essential to keep their school uniforms clean and protected. Please ensure your child brings an art smock to every art class. An old oversized shirt works just as well! This will help us keep the mess to a minimum and allow your child to fully immerse themselves in their creative process.

STEAM Show Update

We regret to inform you that our annual STEAM Show, which was eagerly anticipated by all, will not go ahead this year. Due to unforeseen circumstances, we have had to make this difficult decision. We understand this news may be disappointing, but rest assured, our students will continue to create wonderful pieces of art, which we will share with you through our website and displays throughout the rest of school year. Our STEAM show will be back in 2025 bigger and better!

Upcoming Projects

This month, students are exploring:

  • Prep & 1: Students have been exploring new skills with a unit on textiles. Preps began by creating magic wands, possibly one of the most popular projects I’ve ever  taught! Students learned how to manage and wind lengths of wool and thread beads. They’ve next been learning how to create a running stitch onto hessian fabric. Grade 1 students have also been hand sewing a running stitch onto hessian around a stencil they created of a teddy bear. They’re confidently threading their own needles and have created some truly impressive work.
  • Grade 2: Students have been exploring sculpture, they’ve used clay to create owls inspired by the artworks from the Tiwi Islands. We now need to wait a couple of weeks for the work to dry and be fired in the kiln before we paint them. In the meantime we’ve started a papier mâché project to create a garden gnome ‘self portrait’.
  • Grade 3-4: Experimenting with different textures using natural materials to create woven sculptures inspired by the Tjanpi weavers from the central desert.
  • Grade 5-6: Our senior artists have also been exploring clay, creating portraits inspired by abstraction. These will look amazing once fired, I’m looking forward to seeing them completed!

Thank you for your continued support in nurturing our students' creativity.
