Grade 5 - 6
Reading
Students are reading information reports about different Olympic Games and milestones embark on an educational journey through the history of one of the world's most celebrated sporting events. These reports offer insights into the evolution of the Olympics, highlighting significant changes and achievements that have shaped the Games over time. By examining key milestones, such as the inclusion of new sports, the participation of women and athletes from diverse backgrounds, and record-breaking performances, students gain a deeper understanding of the social, political, and cultural contexts that influence the Olympics. Through these studies, students not only learn about sports history but also draw inspiration from the perseverance and innovation that have driven the Olympics forward.
Writing
Students are learning about writing biographies in the context of famous Olympians delve into a fascinating blend of sports history and personal achievement. By exploring the lives of these extraordinary athletes, students gain insights into the dedication, discipline, and perseverance required to excel at the highest level of competition. They learn to research and gather information from various sources, honing their skills in organising facts and crafting compelling biographies. This process not only improves their writing abilities but also inspires them by showcasing the triumphs and challenges these Olympians faced on their journey to greatness.
Mathematics
As students consolidate their learning about fractions, they build a strong foundation that prepares them for the transition to decimals. Mastery of fractions involves understanding how to compare, add, subtract, multiply, and divide different fractional values, which enhances their problem-solving skills and mathematical reasoning. As they move into the new unit on decimals, students start to recognize the relationship between fractions and decimals, seeing how these two concepts are interconnected. This transition introduces them to the decimal system, where they learn to perform operations with decimals and apply this knowledge to real-world situations, such as money and measurements. By connecting their prior knowledge of fractions with their new understanding of decimals, students develop a more comprehensive grasp of numerical relationships, setting the stage for further exploration of mathematics.
Interschool Sports
During this semester's first round of interschool sports against Rangebank Primary School, the students showcased the school’s PROUD values in remarkable ways. Throughout the morning, students maintained a positive attitude, cheering on their teammates and celebrating each other's successes. They demonstrated respect not only towards their own peers but also towards the opposing team and officials, adhering to the principles of fair play and sportsmanship. By taking ownership of their roles in the games, they showed responsibility and accountability, whether they were on the field or supporting from the sidelines. Their determination shone through as they persevered in challenging moments, giving their best effort and displaying resilience.
