Grade 4

Reading

Reading has been focusing on different tools we can use to decipher a text. As we have been looking at persuasive texts, the students have been looking at emotive language, rhetoric questions, exaggerations also known as hyperbole, the rule of three and alliterations. We have also learned the difference between direct speech and indirect speech. They have been exploring how the different types of speech can affect the author's argument to persuade the reader.

Writing

Students have been further exploring how to write a persuasive text. We set them the difficult task of trying to persuade Mr Abdallah that we need a canteen at Grayling immediately! Using different persuasive techniques and high modality words, each student did an amazing job. Some students even had the chance to read their persuasive text to Mr Abdallah in person to try and convince him. Not sure if we have got the job done, but he was very impressed with the quality of the cohort's work.

Maths

In our Maths classes, we have been learning about fractions, exploring how different parts make up a whole, locating fractions on a number line, and understanding equivalence. We are discovering how fractions like 1/2 and 2/4 represent the same amount, even though they look different. Additionally, we have been practicing subtraction with regrouping during our daily review sessions. With consistent practice, we are becoming more proficient at regrouping, making us more confident in our subtraction skills.

Integrated

Within Integrated, we have been exploring what life was like in Britain in the 1700’s. Students discovered what daily life was like for children and families in this historical era. We discussed crimes that were committed, and why this was. We looked at the conditions of living and the life of convicts.

Students then researched The Highway Men to find out who they were and what they did. We found out that they were people who would rob others. Next week, we extend upon this, futher looking at the lives of convicts in Britain.
