Grade 2

It’s been a busy couple of weeks in Year 2! We had two fantastic experiences that our students recently enjoyed—their excursion to Myuna Farm and a thrilling football incursion right here at school!

Excursion to Myuna Farm

Two weeks ago, our students embarked on an enriching excursion to Myuna Farm, where they had the opportunity to connect with nature and learn about farm life. The day was filled with hands-on experiences, giving our young learners a chance to:

  • Interact with Animals: From feeding camels and sheep to petting rabbits, the students delighted in meeting a variety of farm animals. Many were particularly thrilled by the chance to milk a cow!
  • Farm-to-Table Education: Students learned about sustainable farming practices and how food goes from the farm to our tables. They explored the vegetable garden, where they identified different crops.
  • Exploring Nature: The students enjoyed a guided tour around the farm, where they observed native wildlife and discovered how farms play a vital role in maintaining our ecosystems.

This excursion was a wonderful opportunity for students to experience the joys of rural life and understand the importance of agriculture in our daily lives.

Football Incursion

Last week, we brought the excitement of AFL football right to our school with a special incursion led by professional coaches. This engaging event aimed to encourage physical activity, teamwork, and a love for sports among our students.

  • Skills Development: Students participated in a series of fun drills and games designed to develop their football skills. They practiced kicking, passing, and goal-scoring techniques, with the coaches offering tips and guidance along the way.
  • Teamwork and Sportsmanship: The incursion emphasized the importance of working together as a team. Through various team-building activities and mini-games, students learned valuable lessons in cooperation, communication, and fair play.

This football incursion not only helped students improve their athletic abilities but also fostered a sense of camaraderie and school spirit.

Mathematics

In our math lessons over the past fortnight, students have been diving into the world of patterns. They explored:

  • Identifying Patterns: Students practiced recognizing and creating repeating patterns using shapes, colors, and numbers.
  • Extending and Predicting: Beyond identifying patterns, students learned how to extend sequences and predict what comes next. This skill is crucial for developing their logical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Initialit

In literacy, our focus this week has been on the 'k' sound, and students have been exploring how it can be made by the letters c and k.

  • Sound Recognition: Through various activities, students practiced identifying the 'k' sound at the beginning and end of words, such as in “cat,” “kite,” “duck,” and “kick.”
  • Letter Sorting: We engaged in sorting activities where students grouped words by whether they start or end with the 'k' sound using c or k. This hands-on practice helped reinforce their understanding of when to use each letter.

Writing

Our budding authors have been hard at work honing their narrative writing skills, with a particular focus on structuring their stories and using correct punctuation.

  • Story Structure: Students learned about the key elements of a narrative, including the beginning, middle, and end. They practiced creating engaging introductions, building suspense in the middle, and crafting satisfying conclusions to their stories.
  • Character and Setting Development: We emphasized the importance of developing interesting characters and vivid settings. Students used descriptive language to bring their stories to life, making their narratives more compelling.
  • Punctuation Practice: Proper punctuation is essential in making their writing clear and easy to read. Students focused on using capital letters, full stops, exclamation and question marks correctly. Through editing exercises, they learned how punctuation can change the meaning of a sentence and improve the flow of their stories.

We’re proud of the creativity and effort our students have put into their writing, and we look forward to seeing their continued growth!

Upcoming Events: Father’s Day Breakfast & Book Week
