Watch Your Child's Math Skills Soar!

Our Assistant Principals in Curriculum and Instruction are diving deep into classrooms to demonstrate engaging math lessons that will ignite your child's passion for numbers. They're focusing on additive thinking strategies, which help kids understand how to add and subtract numbers in creative and flexible ways. Miss Layton and Ms Martin work alongside our incredible teachers to model these strategies and provide curriculum support.

From kindergarten to sixth grade, our students are becoming incredible mathematicians, mastering these essential skills and building a strong foundation for future learning. To reinforce these skills at home, consider these fun activities:

  • Everyday Math: Incorporate math into daily activities. For example, ask your child to help you calculate the cost of shopping, measure ingredients for a recipe, or count the steps to the bus stop.
  • Number Games: Play games that involve numbers, such as dice games, card games, or board games. These games can help your child practice addition, subtraction, and other math skills in a fun and engaging way.
  • Math Puzzles: Challenge your child with math puzzles, riddles, or brain teasers. These can help them think critically and develop problem-solving skills.
  • Real-World Applications: Discuss real-world examples of math, such as how math is used in architecture, sports, or technology. This can help your child see the relevance of math in their everyday lives.

By supporting your child's learning at home, you can help them develop a strong foundation in math and set them up for success in the future.

High Potential & Gifted Education

Tarrawanna Public School recently hosted a pioneering Community of Practice for High Potential and Gifted Education. This networking session brought together a diverse group of educators, including teachers, assistant principals, and high school teachers, to collaborate on a shared vision for supporting and nurturing high potential and gifted students. By connecting with passionate individuals in this field, we aim to strengthen and expand our HPGE community. Our belief is that inspired leaders lead to inspired students, and this event was a crucial step in highlighting our successes and charting the future of HPGE education across the network.

Our APCI, Miss Layton, delivered an engaging workshop alongside our dedicated HPAG teacher, Ms. Lam. Together, they explored strategies and approaches to make a meaningful difference in the lives of high potential and gifted students. Through this Community of Practice, Tarrawanna PS has taken a significant step towards creating a more inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students. We are excited to continue working with our partners to foster a culture of excellence and innovation in HPGE education.

Check-in & Year 1 Phonics Assessments

From this week, students in years 3-6 will begin participate in NSW Department of Education literacy and numeracy check-in assessments. These are untimed assessments completed by students on devices that provide valuable diagnostic data for our teachers. Ms Martin will be coordinating the assessments.

Similarly, students in year 1 are currently completing mandatory phonics assessments with their teachers. This is an important tool to identify any gaps in core students phonics knowledge, so we can tailor support where needed.
