KM: Why is it our responsibility to look after the oceans?
Kindergarten students are currently engaged in a 'rich task' centered around the question, "Why is it our responsibility to look after the oceans?" We have been exploring how both humans and animals rely on the oceans, researching various endangered marine species, and recording our findings through the development of an information report and various artwork. Next week, the students will enhance their learning experience with an excursion to Puckey’s Lagoon, where they will observe firsthand how human activities impact the surrounding environment and marine life.
K/1H: Saving Our Truffula Trees: A Journey into Sustainability
We’re thrilled to share that our students have been hard at work this term on an exciting inquiry unit "Saving Our Truffula Trees: A Journey into Sustainability." Inspired by Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax, this unit centres around The Once-ler, who has come to our town of Tarrwanna with plans to cut down our trees. This has sparked deep discussions and meaningful learning experiences in our classroom.
Throughout this unit, the students have been researching and learning about the crucial role trees play in our environment, the serious impacts of deforestation, and how we can all contribute to protecting our planet. Their dedication and enthusiasm have been inspiring as they dive into these important topics.
Our ultimate goal is for the students to create their own campaigns to stop The Once-ler and save the trees. We’re excited to announce that these campaigns will be showcased during an open classroom event at the end of the term. We can’t wait for you to see the incredible work your children have done!
3/4C: Olympic Games
During Term 3, 3/4C has been diving into the world of Paris and the 2024 Olympic Games. So far, students have created slideshow presentations on an Olympian of their choice and have created a diary outlining the key events that happened during each day. They’ve also been spreading the Olympic spirit by running weekly sports rotations for the kindergarten class. Currently, students are collaborating on a podcast that explores the excitement and controversies surrounding the hosting of the Olympic Games!
1/2MP: Designing and building a park
1/2MP are exploring and looking at the features of places and how we care for them for our ‘Rich Task’ this term. As a culminating task for our Geography and Science unit, we will be working to design and build a park using different materials.
This week students have developed an understanding of how places can be cared for. We investigated the reasons why people go to parks and identified the natural and built features of a local park. We are currently writing a persuasive letter to our community convincing them why we need a new park and asking them to donate money towards building it.
1/2MP have been working very hard this term and we can not wait to share all our hard work in week 9 during our open classrooms.
Stage 3 - STEM Project
Stage 3 have been introduced to the TCS Sydney Marathon goIT Challenge in partnership with the NSW Department of Education. This partnership has included the opportunity to work with Corrimal High School Teacher Mr Tauntan and Mrs Judd, developing an idea and pitch to reduce the impact on our environment during large events such as the Sydney Marathon. The students will record their idea and submit it to a panel, with the requirementg that it must address the The Global Goals
With a growing number of athletes and spectators participating in the TCS Sydney Marathon from around the globe and across Australia, we want to showcase innovative sustainability practices, with the aim of creating a marathon that will inspire and sustain future generations and set new standards for sustainable responsibility. This partnership challenges school-aged students to develop a creative solution to ensure that the TCS Sydney Marathon is one of the most environmentally sustainable events of its kind in the world.
The Living Classroom
It’s been harvesting season during Term 3, and students have enjoyed gathering a variety of fruits and vegetables, including bananas and lettuce. This term has also been exciting as the gardening ambassador shirts have arrived, adding to the students' enthusiasm.
