Student Learning

What's been happening in Year 6
In Year 6 we have enjoyed many different learning tasks this term. Our unit on Democracy has involved learning about the parliamentary system. We went to Parliament House in Adelaide with the Year 5s last Friday. Erin Thompson was our tour guide and we were taken around both old and new Parliament House. We learnt about the upper and lower house, and how bills are passed. We really enjoyed our excursion!
In Art we have been making pop art. We are using onomatopoeias to create these.
In English, we are learning about debating. We are planning debates using evidence, and will debate our topics in class. We need to brainstorm rebuttals and be prepared for what the other team will come up with. We are looking forward to seeing who wins the debate!
Bali Life Stalls are approaching soon, and we are busy planning these in Leaders Passport. We have created budgets to work out our profit or loss margin. We look forward to seeing you at our stalls on Monday and Tuesday of Week 9. We have received the following message from Bali Life Foundation about how our fundraising will assist them.
On behalf of everyone at Bali Life Foundation, I want to extend our deepest gratitude for the generous gestures towards our children. Your support has come at a critical time for us, and it will make a significant impact on our operations and the lives of the children we serve. We are excited to inform you that your donation/fundraising will go towards purchasing a new Suzuki Carry 1,500cc 2024 model pick-up truck.
Your contribution is not just a financial support; it is an investment in the well-being and development of our children and the operational effectiveness of our foundation. The impact of your generosity will be felt across our programs, and for that, we are truly grateful.
Thank you once again for your unwavering support and kindness. We look forward to sharing more updates with you in the near future.
Warm regards

Year 5 & 6 Excursion
The Year 5 students also enjoyed the excursion to Parliament House in Adelaide. Here are some of their reflections of the day.

At Parliament House, we passed a bill in the House of Representatives, saw the library, and learnt a lot about the large building and who does and did work there. One thing I enjoyed was passing the bill through the House of Representatives, because I learnt a lot about it and because the seating there was so comfy. A lot of places in Parliament House I had remembered from studying them like: The House of Representatives, the Senate, and the main entrance. I learnt that in the House of Representatives, the red line that separates the two sides is called the Blood Line. It was called that because in the older days, members of parliament would bring weapons to bill passing gatherings, and whenever they would disagree, they would pull out their weapon (normally a sword) and start fighting. So, they put the blood line there which means you can’t go over it. The reason it is still there is because it is now a tradition.

For our excursion we took a tour of Parliament House. I really enjoyed seeing all the beautiful architecture and being in the mock debate. I learnt a lot about how debates work and about the Legislative Council, as well as the House of Assembly. Some connections I made included the Speaker, The House of Representatives, and the mace. I do not fully understand why the opposition always has less people and would like to know more about it.

Last Friday, we went to the South Australian Parliament House. Erin Thompson showed us cool things about Parliament House including the rare book collection and the House of Assembly. It was super fun being the Speaker in the role play of a 'No Homework Bill'. We found out more about what they do there, and it gave us proof about what we have been learning. I learnt where everyone sits, how the place is run and all about the different houses in the South Australian Parliament. I wonder why a law has to be passed through two houses? And, how do you take care of a place that big?
Foundation Excursion
Yesterday, the Foundation students visited Cleland Wildlife Park as part of our iUnit where we have been looking at living things. We had an educational talk and got to learn about different animals, and even got to see some up close and pat them.
We got to spend some time walking around the park, seeing lots of animals up close and personal. We enjoyed feeding kangaroos, patting koalas, and looking at different native Australian animals.
All the children thoroughly enjoyed the excursion and it was a great experience to see our native animals in their natural environments.

Choir at Resthaven
On Thursday 22nd August, Pilgrim Choir walked to Resthaven Aberfoyle Park and sang for the residents there. The choir sang beautifully and it was thoroughly enjoyed by the residents. One of the residents, when thanking the choir, gave the choir a score of 11/10! Thanks to all the students for their hard work and servant hearts to bless the residents of Resthaven in this way.
