Science Week in Preschool – the wonder of the world

Science is all around us in our everyday lives.

"Engaging with science starts in early childhood as young children explore their environment and start to make sense of the natural world that surrounds them. It is important for early childhood educators to tap into and extend upon the innate sense of wonder that children possess as they delight in their discoveries about the natural world" ACARA 2011

Each day, our ‘little scientists’ have enjoyed the opportunity to use many household materials to explore scientific concepts. Children have taken on roles of inquirers, investigators, researchers and problem solvers, using their senses to engage in a range of hands-on learning experiences.

Educators have promoted the use of scientific language and processes to help children grow in their knowledge and understanding of science.

Our questions for you to ponder;

  • Did you know popcorn can dance?
  • Have you ever made your own rain cloud?
  • Have you ever made a water walk?
  • Were you aware that eggs can bounce?
  • Have you ever heard of magic milk?
  • Is it possible to poke wooden skewers in a bag of water without it leaking?
  • What came first, the chicken or the egg?

Fostering children’s knowledge of biological concepts, children experienced living things through gardening and our ELC ‘Henny Penny’ hatching chicken enclosure.

The use of common household items such as water, vinegar, bicarbonate of soda, eggs, food colouring, corn flour, cotton balls and popcorn kernels has provoked children to use their prior knowledge to form the basis for their own predictions.

Educators have supported reflective thinking by encouraging children to consider why things happen and what can be learned from these household items, through the lens of scientific thinking.  This further strengthens the principles and practices that underpin our Early Years Learning Framework within the ELC.

How exciting to think that, as Educators, we may be inspiring the world’s future scientists simply by sharing our excitement at their ideas and enthusiasm for their inquiries and wonderings.
