Celebrating Literacy at Book Week
Children’s Book Week 2024 was a celebration of the power of books, reading, ideas and our Nexus-J Library service. Staff, students and families came together through a range of activities. The highlight of the week was the Dress-Up day, where Junior School students dressed up as their favourite book character. Costumes reflected the creative efforts of families, often thanks to creative use of cardboard boxes and items borrowed from parents’ wardrobes. Competitions were available for students to enter, a gratitude day was held for teaching staff who support everything that’s Nexus-J, and live webinars from our best-known and awarded Australian authors were streamed into classrooms.
Senior School students from Years 7, 8 and 12 visited in their own exciting costumes and read stories to our youngest classes. Our traditional ‘Readers Night In’ set aside time at home for families to read together and send in a photo to celebrate.
The Book Week spirit is truly a collaborative one which demonstrates the value the College places on developing literacy within the classroom and at home. Thank you, teaching staff and families, for joining in!
River School
In 2024 the College has proudly introduced an exciting new program for Year 3 students at Dyoondalup (Point Walter) called River School. This initiative harnesses Outdoor Learning in a dynamic approach to engage students in hands-on learning experiences.
Students have had the opportunity to visit Dyoondalup once each term, beginning in the season of Bunuru. The program’s focus areas include Science, Art, Language development and History, fostering academic and personal growth through shared experiences. In the classroom, students build on these experiences by deepening their learning and understanding. They have learned to manage themselves outside the classroom in a public environment while participating in collaborative activities designed to enhance communication skills. In Term 4 the program will conclude with the overnight Outdoor Learning Program, reinforcing these skills in the same familiar setting.
During the final River School day in Term 3, we were thrilled to welcome our community, including grandparents, parents and special guests, to join the students for a sausage sizzle and share in the celebration.
Pre-Primary students creating a new garden
The students in Miss Bates' Pre-Primary class have been finding ways to help take care of special places in their community. At school, they planted different plants to attract insects and birds. They had fun creating and looking after their new garden.
“We were excited to start our garden by planting a variety of seeds and seedlings. We carefully chose plants that would attract insects and birds, knowing that this would help create a healthy environment for them. As we dug holes, planted each seedling and watered them, we talked about how these plants would grow and support the animals around us. It was the beginning of a special project where we could see firsthand how our efforts help nature thrive.”
