"The female trade exhibition was amazing, from construction to technology and so much more, the experience was worth it. Personally, my favourite part was learning about professional flight attendants and going into the boat, onto motorcycles, and many construction vehicles. There were many hands-on activities like using the construction tools, concreting, and electrician activities. The exhibition had many people at every place to explain about the job, apprenticeships, and how to get there from classes to VCE or VM I would recommend this experience as it has given me a bigger view of the opportunities out there for the future and it was a day with too many lollies, who doesn’t want that! Year 12 VM students, Kayla and Dylan organised a fundraiser for Dolly’s Dream. The students cooked a sausage sizzle, with the help of Year 10 student Nate and were taking gold coin donations. $169 dollars was raised for Dolly’s Dream.
Last Monday 20th May we had a collection of universities and independent tertiary colleges visit our College to help students prepare for future careers. The information provided by TIS focuses on VTAC and transitioning to tertiary education after high school. Students could ask questions of tertiary representatives at the expo component.
Year 12 Chemistry students have been studying the process of Electrolysis. This involves passing a direct current through a solution forcing a non-spontaneous reaction.
Electrolysis is used in the manufacture of some chemicals and substances that cannot be easily produced in any other way. Hydrogen gas is being investigated as a fuel for the future. When hydrogen gas is used as a fuel, it reacts with oxygen producing water and energy. The electrolysis of water is a source of hydrogen gas but still demands a source of energy to perform the electrolysis.
Maybe one of our Chemistry students will one day lead a research team in investigating efficient and sustainable methods to create hydrogen gas that can be used as a clean fuel.
VM students held an expo this week for their work-related skills class sharing career pathways. The expo was visited by Year 9 and 10 students.
This week, 19 students completed their Construction Induction Course, gaining their white card qualification. The students were required to observe any hazards around the college grounds for their final assessment.
Year 10 Food Studies homemade pasta - Spaghetti Bolognese and Carisma lentil shepherd's pie.
Year 11 students made Italian meatball subs and homemade pasta - spaghetti bolognese
Year 12 students made spicy chicken skewers.
On Thursday 16th May, Year 11 and 12 students headed to Omeo for an overnight camp, with two days of mountain biking on the trails of Omeo. It was an amazing trip!
Enjoy the following reflection from Isabel:
"During the day on both Thursday and Friday the weather was great. It was sunny but not too hot. The morning and evening however were freezing cold, when we woke up Friday morning there was ice on the tent and it was so chilly everything hurt. But the cold couldn't ruin how pretty it was. The sun was shining on the trees with their sunburnt autumn leaves. It was so beautiful.
I hadn't really done any actual mountain bike riding, so I was pretty nervous and unsure at first, but as we started on Thursday I quickly overcame the fear and actually had so much fun. The parts where we had to ride uphill kind of sucked, but it was worth it for the adrenaline and speed of riding back down.
I was impressed by both Erica and Tess. Erica just picked it up so quickly and got really good. Tess had seemed like she was going to give up, but she kept on going, while encouraging others, and it seemed like she had fun."
Congratulations to the following senior students for participating in the Melbourne University Maths Competition!
Student | Year group |
Andrew | 11N |
Vannan | 10Q |
It’s fantastic to see so many of our students from all year levels stepping up to the challenges of such a tough competition! We are proud of the students’ accomplishments and look forward to witnessing their continued success in the world of mathematics and beyond. This competition is of a demanding standard, designed to identify real mathematical talent, and challenges and extends students’ problem-solving skills. Between 3000 and 5000 students from across Australia enter.
Homework club is held in the Senior building every Wednesday and Thursday. This is open for ALL students at our College.
Homework club is a terrific opportunity for students to both catch up or get ahead in work. Students are offered the opportunity to work in small groups with other students or have one on one tutoring with their teachers, or other teachers.
If you are interested, speak with your teachers and let them know when you are looking to attend or go to the Senior building on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.
Homework club runs from 3.20 pm to 5.00 pm and students are free to arrive and leave as they need.
