Our Year 7 class, 7G, has had a remarkable start to their secondary schooling experience, continually showing resilience, focus, and respect. At the Summit Camp in Trafalgar in Term 1, they embraced the key mindset of 'Get comfortable being uncomfortable,' and this has carried over to their learning space, where they are challenging themselves as students each day. Their settled, cooperative nature creates a positive learning environment, and we look forward to their continued growth and success as the year progresses.
English
In English this term, we've delved into Margaret Wild's captivating picture story books, searching for deeper meaning. We've explored connections, posed thought-provoking questions, identified themes and symbolism, and then presented our original thoughts in reading responses. It's been a joy to witness 7G not only enjoy the simplicity of these books but also impress me with their profound understanding and insights into the texts.
Maths
In Maths this term, our focus has been on our Food Truck CAT project. This involved detailed planning and drawing of scaled floor and wall plans for their Food Trucks. We delved into financial maths, exploring percentages of discount, best buys, and transaction concepts. The culmination of this task has been the hands-on construction of our Food Trucks, which has sparked creativity and enthusiasm among all of 7G in the classroom.
Textiles
In Textiles, students have cut out an apron pattern from their selected fabric and have been very busy on the sewing machines, sewing hems and creating straps for their apron. All students are working well on the sewing machines and helping each other to learn the skills to complete their apron.
Art
In Art, 7G learn to create a painting, Under the Sea, with an understanding of how to use colour and colour blending and experimenting with mixing colour.
Students compose sketches of an underwater scene for painting that identifies and describes colour used according to theory and effects. They are required to identify foreground, middle ground and background. See the Art page in our newsletter for the finished products!
Science
7G had the challenge to build a ski lift using household supplies including string, tape and a couple of paper cups. Students made lots of different designs, trying for maximum distance or extra features when they had mastered the system of moving a lift to the end area and dropping off the payload. If you are interested yourself at making your own, have a look at Build Your Own Model Ski Lift | Science Project (sciencebuddies.org) for the instructions.

It’s fantastic to see so many of our students stepping up to the challenges of such a tough competition! We are proud of the students’ accomplishments and look forward to witnessing their continued success in the world of mathematics and beyond. This competition is of a demanding standard, designed to identify real mathematical talent, and challenges and extends students’ problem-solving skills. Between 3000 and 5000 students from across Australia enter.
