Year 9 HSIE - Honouring Captain Charles Linklater’s Wartime Service

This term, the Year 9 HSIE students embarked on an immersive journey into the wartime experiences of Captain Charles Linklater, an Australian soldier who served in the First World War at Gallipoli, as well as on the Western Front.

Taking on the role of historians, the students meticulously analysed countless primary source documents related to Captain Linklater’s service, gaining insights into the realities of the war. The students’ efforts culminated in the creation of commemorative scrapbooks, honouring Captain Linklater’s bravery and dedication.

In a creative twist, the students wrote letters and diary entries from the perspectives of Captain Linklater and his wife, bringing to life their personal experiences and emotions during the war. This project not only honed the students' research and imaginative writing skills but also fostered a deep appreciation for the sacrifices made by those who served.

The Year 9 HSIE students embraced this opportunity to delve into history, creating a meaningful tribute to Captain Charles Linklater and enriching their understanding of Australia’s wartime heritage.

Year 9 PASS – Bike Riding

As a part of the Physical Activity and Sports Studies curriculum in Term 2, the Year 9 PASS students have had the opportunity to go bike riding during their double periods each week, utilising the school mountain bikes. This experience is preparing them for their PASS camp journey, held at the end of Term 3, across three days, where they will have to ride 80+ kilometres to the Barmah area.

In each double period, the students attempt to reach 20+ kilometres in order to train their aerobic and muscular endurance to eventually undertake the 3 day journey. The bike rides consist of both road riding and mountain bike riding, teaching students how to be a road user, how to ride as a group, using and developing their teamwork skills and challenging themselves on some tricky mountain bike trails.

The students have discovered some of the best tracks in town that they otherwise wouldn’t have explored, including the East Track, 5-mile Tracks and the Vic Park Scenic Drive. The students have the opportunity to learn key bike maintenance skills including how to change a tube in a flat tyre.

We would like to thank the PDHPE faculty for the immense organisation that goes into allowing students to ride offsite and Mr Townrow, Mr McMahon and Miss Garden for taking the students to explore our beautiful town by bike! It has been great to see the students looking forward to their bike rides each week, challenging themselves and working hard to improve their fitness and teamwork, in preparation for their big journey!

Year 10 PASS – Croquet

This term, Miss James’ and Mr Townrow’s Year 10 PASS classes have been fortunate enough to travel to the Rich River Golf Club to participate in croquet. It has been great to see the everyone's enthusiasm and eagerness to learn a new and unique sport that they otherwise wouldn’t have had to opportunity to partake in (teachers included!). The students have even been able to compete amongst themselves (some more competitive than others!) in games within their groups. Some students have found that they have quite the talent for croquet and have claimed that it will be their retirement sport!

We would like to thank the volunteers from the Rich River Croquet Club for giving up their time to teach our students the correct technique and the main tactics of croquet. We would also like to thank the Croquet Club for allowing us to utilise their well-manicured greens and their equipment, including mallets and balls.

Netball Umpires

On 31 May, Echuca & District Netball Association (EDNA) held their annual Grade 5 & 6 Netball Tournament for local schools in the area. MAG entered mixed teams of Years 5 & 6 students to play against other schools and there were a number of selected Secondary students from Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 umpiring the games.

Pleasingly, we had three MAG students selected by EDNA to umpire the semi and grand finals. Chelsea Angove (Year 8) umpired the Boys/Mixed Semi-Final whilst Aleisha Moon (Year 10) and Lyla Harris (Year 7) were selected to umpire the A-Grade girls and Boys/Mixed Grand-Finals respectively. Congratulations to all students who helped umpire - we are all very proud of your efforts!
