Year 4/5/6

On Thursday, 15 May 2025, the 4/5/6 class visited the Wagga Wagga Civic Theatre to watch Disney’s High School Musical, presented by Kildare Catholic College. The students were thrilled to see Lulu, a former classmate, performing on stage. Back at school, they connected the experience to their English lessons by writing a report.
EN2-2A – Plans, composes and reviews a range of texts that are more demanding in terms of topic, audience and language.
EN3-2A – Composes, edits and presents well-structured and coherent texts.
🍦 Science in Action: Our Ice Cream in a Bag Experiment! 🍦
This term, our budding scientists in Years 4–6 embarked on a deliciously fun experiment—making ice cream in a bag! The goal? To explore the states of matter and observe how materials can change from one state to another.
We began with a lively discussion about solids, liquids, and gases, using real-life examples and images to help students identify the properties of each state. Students then sorted a variety of objects—like balloons, rocks, and ice—into the correct categories, explaining their reasoning with confidence and curiosity.
Next came the highlight: our cooking connection! Students combined milk, sugar, and vanilla in a ziplock bag, then placed it in a larger bag filled with ice and salt. After lots of shaking and laughter, we expected to see our liquid mixture transform into a creamy solid. However… things didn’t go quite as planned!
Despite our best efforts, the ice cream didn’t fully solidify. But rather than being discouraged, our students took a scientific approach—they reflected on what might have gone wrong. Was the ice too warm? Did we need more salt? Was the shaking time too short? We researched, hypothesised, and discussed our findings like true scientists.
The best part? We had a fantastic time experimenting and learning together. And now, armed with our newfound knowledge, we’re excited to try again soon!
Through this experiment, students not only explored the science of matter but also developed their investigation and problem-solving skills—and had a whole lot of fun doing it!
ST2-13MW: Identifies the physical properties of natural and processed materials, and how these properties influence their use.
ST3-13MW: Describes how the properties of materials determine their use for specific purposes.
ST3-1WS-S: Plans and conducts scientific investigations to answer testable questions, and collects and summarises data to communicate conclusions.
