Year 2/3

English and History Integration: Writing Factual Recounts
In English, our students are currently learning to write factual recounts—texts that retell real events in a clear, accurate, and structured way. As part of this learning, we are focusing on the creation of the Aboriginal Flag as our current text creation activity.
This task is closely linked to the novel we are reading in class, Yirra and Her Deadly Dog, Demon, which offers rich insight into contemporary Aboriginal culture and community. It also connects to our History unit, where we are exploring the concept of Country and learning about the histories and continuing cultures of First Nations Peoples.
By combining reading, writing, and historical inquiry, students are developing a deeper understanding of Aboriginal identity, symbolism, and storytelling, while strengthening their writing and comprehension skills.
Thank you for your ongoing support. We encourage you to have conversations at home about what your child is learning, particularly around the importance of the Aboriginal Flag and the meaning it holds for First Nations Australians.
