Italian at St Patrick’s – Semester 1 Update

From Signora Bassily

Ciao a tutti!

This semester, our students at St Patrick’s have been enthusiastically engaging with the Italian language through a variety of fun, interactive, and meaningful learning experiences. Each year level has been exploring different cultural themes and building their language skills in exciting ways.

Our Prep students have been discovering Italian through greetings, numbers, colours, and the alphabet. They’ve been responding to familiar routines and games, developing early vocabulary and listening skills.

In Grade 1, students have been learning about Italian culture by identifying the colours of the Italian flag and recognising Rome as the capital city. They’ve also been practicing simple greetings and are about to engage in numbers (1-10), days and months of the year.

Grade 2 students have been expanding their vocabulary by expressing how they are feeling, using numbers up to 20, and exploring how Italian adjectives change based on gender. They are soon to learn about the seasonal differences between Italy and Australia.

Our Grade 3 students have been using adjectives to describe people’s appearance and personality. They have been participating in discussions using numbers up to 30 and will begin learning fruit vocabulary with good pronunciation.

In Grade 4, students have been exploring vocabulary related to houses, using adjectives to describe different features, and extending their number knowledge to 50. This Term they will be extending their Italian vocabulary by learning to name a variety of vegetables in Italian.

Grade 5 students have been developing their conversational skills by introducing others and describing how people are feeling using more complex expressions. They’ve been working on number fluency up to 80 and will work to further expand their Italian food knowledge and vocabulary.

Finally, Grade 6 students have been learning how to describe places found in cities. They are working towards strengthening their fluency with numbers up to 100 and will begin using food-related verbs in context.

It has been wonderful to see such strong engagement and curiosity from all our students. Italian learning this semester has been vibrant and joyful, and I look forward to seeing their confidence continue to grow.

Grazie mille e buon lavoro a tutti!
