Science News - Term 1 Wrap Up

Term 1 has been an exciting and action-packed start to the year in Science at Ballarat High School! Across all year levels, students have been engaging in hands-on learning, exploring the world around them through scientific inquiry and investigation.
Year 7 students had an exciting opportunity to visit the Tech School, where they participated in the STEM in Action program. This immersive experience allowed students to explore how perceptions and senses influence food choices, all while getting hands-on with cutting-edge technology like VR headsets and robots. Back at school, students have been introduced to the basics of science and safe laboratory practices. This term, they’ll return to the Tech School to use laser cutters and construct mini ballistae, applying their knowledge of forces and motion in an engaging Physics CAT.
Year 8 have been deepening their understanding of matter, investigating atoms, molecules and chemical reactions. Through a series of practical activities and experiments, they’ve explored the different types of reactions and how substances interact at the atomic level.
Year 9 students began the year with a focus on ecology, examining ecosystems, food chains and the interdependence of living things. Towards the end of the term, they began transitioning into physics, setting the stage for some exciting learning in Term 2.
Our Year 12 Biology students also had a valuable learning experience at the Tech School, where they conducted advanced experiments including gel electrophoresis to analyse family DNA and the creation of recombinant plasmids. They also had the unique opportunity to visit the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute, gaining insight into real-world applications of biomedical science and the importance of ongoing research in the fight against cancer.
Overall, Term 1 has set the tone for a dynamic and engaging year in science. We are incredibly proud of our students’ enthusiasm and curiosity and we look forward to the exciting scientific adventures ahead in Term 2!
